Trump gives the green light: Huawei may get Google service license in the near future

According to the New York Times, Trump plans to issue licenses in the near future to allow Huawei to work with some US suppliers.

This has also led many media to speculate that Google may also resume GMS (Google Mobile Services, including Gmail, YouTube, Google Maps and other Google core applications, which require official Google certification and charge a fee to use) service certification for Huawei in the near future, that is, to resume pre-installing Google applications on Huawei's overseas version of mobile phones; this is of great significance to the sales of Huawei mobile phones in overseas markets.

In May this year, US President Trump signed an executive order declaring the United States to be in a "state of emergency," prohibiting US companies from using telecommunications equipment produced by companies that pose a threat to national security. Afterwards, the US Department of Commerce officially included Huawei and its dozens of subsidiaries on the "Entity List," meaning that without the approval of the US government, Huawei will not be able to purchase components and technology from US companies, including Google.

Google has temporarily stopped all business dealings with Huawei, including software and hardware transfers and the provision of related technologies, except for services publicly available through open source licenses. As a result, Huawei's recently released Mate 30 series uses the AOSP (Android Open Source Project, a Google-led open source project plan that contains a basic version of the Android kernel operating system that anyone can use) version of the Android system, and has built-in Huawei's own app store on the overseas version of the new machine. However, Huawei has previously stated that if the United States is willing to lift the ban, Huawei can push Google Play to the Mate 30 series models overnight.

It is worth mentioning that there was a method circulating on the Internet to manually install Google applications on Huawei's new phones, but this is not an official solution and has been blocked by Google.

The good news is that at a meeting last week, President Trump began to give a handful of U.S. companies the green light to work with Huawei by approving licenses that would allow them to circumvent the government’s ban this year.

However, the New York Times also stated that the licenses that allow US companies to cooperate with Huawei can be seen as a goodwill gesture to ease the tense cooperation relationship between China and the US, but the actual effect may be limited - because as early as June this year, Trump said that US companies could sell parts to Huawei if there were no major security issues. Moreover, the licenses required to cooperate with Huawei are issued by the US Department of Commerce, but an informed source at the Department of Commerce told the media that "for now, the situation has not changed."

The New York Times also pointed out that despite the ban, many companies still maintain a cooperative relationship with Huawei - they avoid marking their products as "Made in the USA" and provide Huawei with parts produced outside the United States.

Sanjay Mehrotra, CEO of U.S. chipmaker Micron, said in a June earnings call that the company had briefly stopped shipping to Huawei, but resumed cooperation after Micron reviewed the entity list rules and determined it could legally supply Huawei. Huawei was Micron's largest customer last year.

However, then again, it is still unknown which companies will be affected by Trump's approval of the license and what impact this move will have on Huawei.
