IDC: China's tablet shipments in the first quarter reached 3.73 million units, with a 29.8% drop in production capacity

IDC China's latest quarterly tablet tracking report shows that China's tablet computer market shipments in the first quarter of 2020 were approximately 3.73 million units. Affected by the "new crown" epidemic, factory production capacity fell by 29.8% year-on-year.

During the epidemic, remote work and online classes led to a surge in consumer demand for tablets, but the shutdown and resumption of work caused unfavorable factors such as manpower, spare parts and logistics, which made it difficult for factories to meet the surge in market demand, and mainstream brand products on the market were out of stock for a long time. Although the epidemic has been brought under control, production capacity has gradually recovered, and product supply problems have gradually eased, the peak of demand has passed, and manufacturers have not fully grasped the market "bonus".

IDC believes that under the influence of this epidemic, remote work and online education will become more normalized in the future, and the demand for tablet computers, which has been dormant for many years, will increase significantly.

Affected by the epidemic, tablet commercial and consumer market shipments decreased significantly in the first quarter, with shipments of only 620,000 units, a year-on-year decrease of 47.8%. In the consumer market, driven by the demand for online education among students, the performance was better than expected, but production capacity restricted supply, with shipments of about 3.1 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 24.6%.

Overview of the top five manufacturers in China's tablet market in the first quarter of 2020:

  • Huawei: Continues to rank first. In the first quarter, Huawei's tablet shipments were about 1.5 million units, a year-on-year increase of 4.3%, and the market share accounted for 40.2%.
  • Apple: Supply chain affects shipments. In the first quarter, Apple shipped about 1.31 million iPads, down 42.5% year-on-year, accounting for 35.1% of the market share.
  • Xiaomi: Product line needs to be updated. Xiaomi tablet shipments in the first quarter were about 210,000 units, down 31.3% year-on-year, and its market share was 5.5%.
  • Microsoft: Shipments remain stable. In the first quarter, Microsoft shipped about 120,000 tablets, down 17.6% year-on-year, and its market share was 3.2%.
  • Lenovo: Affected greatly by the epidemic. In the first quarter, Lenovo's tablet shipments were about 60,000 units, a year-on-year decrease of 49.5%, and its market share in shipments accounted for 1.7%, a decrease of 1.6 percentage points.
