Google is shutting down its mobile shopping apps for iOS and Android and directing users to its web-based Google Shopping site. On Friday, XDA Developers discovered that the word "sunset" was added to several strings of code in the Shopping app, suggesting that the apps were being decommissioned. A Google spokesperson said the apps will continue to work until June. "In the coming weeks, we will no longer support the Shopping app. All of the features that the app provides to users can be found in the Shopping channel on Google's official website, and we will continue to build shopping features in the Shopping channel and other Google sections, including Google's official apps," the spokesperson said. Of course, the shopping.google.com website will continue to remain active. The Google Shopping app lets users select items from thousands of online stores and pay for them with a single tap using their Google account. While Google says the app will end in June, some users have seen an error message saying "something went wrong" when trying to use the Shopping app. The mobile shopping app is just the latest product to be canceled by Google. Many of the previous products such as Google Reader (many people are still worried about it), Google Hangouts, and Google Plus have died on the beach, and the list of closures continues to grow. |
