Android 12 is expected to introduce an automatic app hibernation feature to free up phone storage space

In January of this year, Google submitted a code change to the AOSP project, which added a feature for automatic app hibernation, which is expected to be implemented in Android 12.

According to the latest test by foreign media XDA, an automatic sleep option has appeared in the preview version of Android 12.

When you open "Settings" -> "Apps", an Unused apps group appears on the App info page of each app. There is only one option under the group, called "remove permissions and free up space".

The feature description states that if the app is not used for a few months, it will:

  • Remove the granted permissions;
  • Prohibit the sending of notifications;
  • Delete temporary files and free up space.

IT Home learned that according to the submitted code, after the App is automatically put into hibernation, the vdex/odex files will be released. The vdex file contains uncompressed DEX files, and the odex file is the executable file after the APK is extracted.

This feature is expected to be implemented in Android 12, but it has not been fully confirmed yet.
