Battery anxiety

Limited by the current level of battery technology development, it is difficult for smartphones to improve battery life by significantly increasing battery capacity without excessively increasing the size of the phone. Therefore, shortening the charging time of the phone and developing fast charging technology have become a common solution adopted by major mobile phone manufacturers to improve the battery life experience of smartphones.

To this end, major mobile phone manufacturers are actively compatible with public fast charging protocols while also vigorously developing private fast charging technologies. The following is an analysis of the level of development of wired fast charging technologies of major mobile phone manufacturers.

PD fast charging

The full name of PD is USB Power Delivery Specification, which is a fast charging standard launched by the USB standardization organization. Currently, the USB power supply extension standard of USB PD fast charging technology supports up to 100W (20V/5A) and is compatible with existing USB standard cables and interfaces. Therefore, in addition to being widely adopted by mobile devices, USB PD is also used in laptops and even monitors.

USB PD fast charging technology

Because USB PD needs to use the CC line for communication and power supply, generally both ends of the PD protocol charging cable use Type-C interface. However, there are also cases where mobile phone manufacturers use Type-A interface on the power supply end through magic modification.

There is also a specification called PPS in the PD protocol. PPS (Programmable Power Supply) is a type of power supply supported by USB PD3.0. It can use the USB PD protocol to adjust the voltage and current, and can adjust the voltage accurately to 20mV, making the voltage regulation more accurate.

The PD protocol is the most widely supported fast charging protocol at present. Most common new smartphones support PD protocol fast charging. In particular, Apple directly adopted the PD fast charging standard as the standard fast charging protocol for Apple devices. The latest iPhone 12 series models support 20W PD fast charging, but it does not come with a charger and users need to purchase it themselves. In this case, outstanding PD charging head products such as Anker Nano PD 20W charging head have been favored by the market.
