A large number of Google Android 12 Beta 4 users are experiencing repeated crashes of "Android System Intelligence"

Foreign media 9to5 Google reported that apart from virtual private network problems and some notifications not popping up, Google Android 12 Beta 4 is quite stable in daily use. However, a problem that has emerged in the past day or so is that "Android System Intelligence" has repeatedly crashed on Android 12.

“Android System Intelligence” is the new name for “Device Personalization Services,” a rebrand that has been rolling out to Pixel phones with Android 11 in recent weeks. ASI/DPS is responsible for “Now Playing,” “Live Captions,” “Notification Actions,” “Screen Focus,” “Text Highlighting,” and other similar “smart” features.

In what's been renamed "Android System Intelligence," the only measurable end-user difference is where the Now Playing home screen icon now appears in the widget sheet.

Reports of it crashing started yesterday, and for most users it happens randomly. Some have noticed that it happens after receiving a notification from a text messaging app, which makes sense since ASI’s job is to extract URLs, addresses, and phone numbers to facilitate button taps.

A large number of Pixel 4, 4a, and 5 phone users are affected, but not all of them. Android 12 Beta 4 seems to have brought a renaming of DPS -> ASI, while on earlier operating systems it was an update to the Play Store. The new version of "System Intelligence" is not properly optimized for Android 12, resulting in crashes.

Users are advised to report this issue in the Android 12 Beta test version feedback app. Although it does not have much impact on daily use, it is annoying to repeatedly close the crash dialog box.
