Ahead of WWDC in June, an Apple job posting mentioned "homeOS," sparking interest that Apple would announce some major home-based operating system at the conference. While that didn't come to pass, "homeOS," a heretofore unheard-of Apple operating system, continued to appear in the company's job postings. A similar iOS engineering position for the Apple Music team posted on October 12 includes "homeOS" that appeared in the June job posting. The position, based in San Diego and also posted on Apple's regional website, mentions "homeOS." Apple currently has two home-based central operating systems, audioOS for HomePod and tvOS for Apple TV. audioOS is based on tvOS, but the two are still distinguished in name. Given that "homeOS" appears again in another job posting, we can assume that this is something Apple has thought of but just hasn't made it public yet. Additionally, "homeOS" may be a name used internally by Apple and may never become the name of a public-facing software platform. |
