15-year-old "weight-loss girl" dies, weighing only 24.8 kg! Family members are heartbroken!

Today, "the girl who lost weight for love passed away" , which made many netizens sigh.

One afternoon in March, the Shenzhen Children’s Hospital Transfer Center received a call for help from a hospital in Dongguan. A 15-year-old girl named Xiaoling (pseudonym) was suffering from severe malnutrition and respiratory failure and had lost consciousness .

After more than 20 days of rescue efforts, the doctors still failed to wake up the lively and lovely girl. After careful consideration, the parents decided to give the child freedom, and her mother accompanied her to the end.

What exactly happened to this 15-year-old girl Xiaoling?

At that time, the girl's father, who was transferred to the hospital by car, told the doctor that his daughter had not eaten anything for nearly 50 days since the third day of the Chinese New Year, and had only drunk water. Last week, she was unconscious at home and was rushed to the hospital. She was 165 cm tall and weighed only 24.8 kg. This weight was even less than some children in the lower grades.

The doctor carefully examined the girl and found that she had no spontaneous breathing and blood was oozing from the corners of her mouth. The biggest problem was that her pupils were not equal in size and her light reflex disappeared. "This is a very bad sign." The pupils are controlled by the brain stem. If the pupils are unresponsive, it means that the brain stem has been damaged and she may not wake up.

After the girl was transferred to Shenzhen Children's Hospital, she was immediately taken for a brain CT scan. The doctor was shocked when he touched her: "It's so light, it feels like I'm lifting a quilt."

He was so thin that he was literally skin and bones. When he was transferred to the bed, the doctor repeatedly reminded him: Be careful, go slowly, and be careful not to break a bone.

Why is the girl like this?

It started out as “losing weight for love”.

The mother recalled that her daughter Xiaoling was at her heaviest when she was in the sixth grade, weighing about 104 pounds. When she entered junior high school, her family discovered that she was "conscious about losing weight." "She told us that she didn't want to put any oil in her food, not even a little bit of oil."

Later, the mother said that according to her classmates, she had a crush on a boy, but that boy liked a girl who was thinner than her.

Later, there was another "pushing force" on the road to weight loss: the psychology of comparison .

Once, Xiaoling saw another girl in her class eating only vegetables and decided that she was losing weight. She couldn't accept the fact that I was prettier than that classmate and had better grades than her, but she was thinner than me!

Gradually, she stopped eating rice and staple food, and finally stopped eating anything except water. So she went from dieting to fasting.

Over the next year and a half, Xiaoling went on hunger strike repeatedly until she fell into a coma and was on the verge of death.

When she was transferred to another hospital in Dongguan, her grandmother, who had raised her, cried and stamped her feet on the ground, refusing to let her granddaughter get on the ambulance: "Don't send her away. Don't let her die outside."

This scene made many people cry.

Some netizens "questioned" why the parents did not intervene in advance?

In fact, the girl’s parents had forced her to go to the hospital many times , but the first time she went, she tried to jump out of the car and opened the door four or five times. When she arrived at the hospital and was forcibly dragged into the ward, she hit her head with a shower head and tried to jump out of the window...

Another reason behind her parents' helplessness was that she suffered from a mental illness that she had completely lost control of: anorexia nervosa.

This is what we often hear about as anorexia. Even psychiatrists are terrified by this disease, as anorexia is one of the mental illnesses with the highest mortality rate .

For most people, losing weight is not sustainable for even three days. But when you "persist" to a certain stage, something magical happens: losing weight is addictive. This addiction causes the brain to secrete dopamine, producing a strong sense of pleasure. This is anorexia nervosa, an eating disorder caused by intentional dieting, which is more common in young women aged 13 to 20.

Patients treat weight loss as if they were taking a shot of chicken blood. In addition to fasting, they will induce vomiting, pick their throats, take laxatives, exercise crazily, and try every possible means.

A patient with anorexia nervosa will never be satisfied with the extent of his weight loss. If his weight remains the same as yesterday after a day, it would be a disaster.

They enjoy seeing themselves tortured to exhaustion and emaciated.

This kind of "out of control" spread to Xiaoling.

At first, Xiaoling's father found a lot of anorexia pictures on the Internet and showed them to her, saying, "If you keep going like this, you will get anorexia."

But Xiaoling vowed: "Don't worry, Dad, I won't get anorexia."

However, one year and three months after losing weight, she found that she had not had her period. Her parents took her to Shenzhen Children's Hospital for examination and she was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa.

Xiaoling's mother said: "At first, she wanted to lose 50 pounds, but when she reached 50 or 60, she had no limit and just kept getting thinner and thinner."

If anorexia nervosa is not intervened early and reaches a serious stage, the prognosis (the effect after treatment) will be very poor.

Because the patient would rather starve to death than eat.

Two long-term follow-up studies conducted abroad have shown that after the implementation of a clear treatment plan, the 10-year mortality rate of anorexia patients reached 6.6%, and the 30-year follow-up mortality rate reached 18% .

This is relatively high among mental disorders.

However, patients usually do not die of starvation, but instead die from systemic complications caused by long-term malnutrition, such as heart disease, organ failure, pneumonia, fractures, and depression and suicide.

Before Xiaoling was transferred to Shenzhen Children's Hospital, she had already developed "14 diseases", all her organs were damaged or even failed, and her brain might never wake up again .

Xiaoling didn't wake up in the end. When the doctor told her parents, "We've tried our best, but we have to make a choice," her father choked up and said, "I can't bear to give up." After much deliberation, her parents decided to give their child freedom, and her mother accompanied her to the end.
