Comparison of eight major online storage services after speed limit: QQ is still the best

Friends who often read the big news should know that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a notice last month, requiring major online storage services to ensure users' basic download speeds and requiring the transformation to be completed before the end of December 2021.

A few days later, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology organized eight online storage companies including Baidu Netdisk, Alibaba Cloud Disk, Tianyi Cloud Disk, and Thunder Cloud Disk to jointly sign a self-discipline convention to ensure the service quality of online storage.

Time flies and it is almost the end of the year. Shichao is curious about how these online storage services have been transformed, so he downloaded them all and prepared to do a comparison to see which one is the best at the moment.

Taking into account that each online storage service will be greatly improved after spending money, I will base this comparison on the free ones, mainly comparing their client coverage, space conditions, transmission speeds, functions, etc.

Well, without further ado, let’s get started.

Let’s first talk about the client coverage of the above-mentioned network storages.

Among these online storage services, Shichao noticed that except for NetEase Cloud Disk and Baidu Cloud Youth Edition, the other online storage services have already achieved full coverage of the four major platforms of Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS.

Baidu Cloud Disk, Hecaiyun and Tianyi Cloud Disk even provide TV clients to facilitate us to access these cloud disks directly on TV:

Baidu Netdisk Youth Edition, which is currently in public beta, only provides iOS and Android clients. It is not ruled out that it will add support for Windows and macOS in the future:

Xunlei Cloud Disk is directly integrated into Xunlei as an auxiliary function of Xunlei:

Of course, you can also access Thunder Cloud Disk directly through the web page:

As for NetEase Cloud Disk, Shichao has reason to suspect that it was just pulled in to make up the numbers, because it was offline two years ago. Now you can only see its file center by logging into the web version of NetEase Mailbox:

Therefore, in this round of competition for client coverage, NetEase Netdisk, which is already at the bottom of the list, can be directly eliminated.

Next is the storage situation of these network disks.

I don't know if it's because I'm an old user, but Shichao's Baidu Netdisk has 2TB of space under his account. Now new users seem to have only 100GB by default, but it seems that you can expand it by completing tasks:

Alibaba Cloud Disk also supports task expansion. Shichao simply entered a few welfare codes, uploaded and shared a few files, and obtained 1.99TB of space. This space is indeed enough:

However, a large part of the space on Alibaba Cloud Disk is not permanent, but has a time limit, which makes people feel a little uncomfortable.

What surprised me the most was Xunlei, which also gave me 2TB of storage space. Could it be because I am an old user?

Sure enough, after I tried to log in with another primary account, it was only 500GB:

Among these online storages, Tianyi Cloud Disk is the one that takes the most care of old users. Can you believe it actually gave me a full 10.04TB of free space!

Now if you register a new Tianyi Cloud Disk account, you can only get 60GB of space, which is more than a little less:

It seems that there are benefits to registering for an online disk early. The benefits they provide during the early promotion period are often very generous, but this is no longer the case in the later stages.

Shichao had never used apps like Tencent WeCloud and Caiyun before, and the space they gave me after registration and logging in was pitifully small.

The former only has 10GB of free space:

The latter has only 20GB of free space:

The new Youth Edition of Baidu Netdisk also has only 10GB of space:

The most stingy among these online storage services is definitely 360 Safe Cloud Disk. Its initial space is 0KB by default, and it doesn’t even provide 1GB of permanent space. If you want to use it, you’ll have to pay for it. . .

5GB free trial for 30 days, you're just treating it like a beggar▼

So Shichao uninstalled 360 Security Cloud Disk on the spot. I declare that in this round of storage space competition, 360 Security Cloud Disk is out~

So what are the transmission speeds of the remaining network disks?

Shichao tested and uploaded a video of 896MB in size. The upload speed of Baidu Netdisk was stable at around 2.6MB/s:

When I downloaded the video to my computer again, the average download speed was only about 150KB/s, which is really a turtle speed:

The upload and download conditions of Xunlei Cloud Disk are basically the same as those of Baidu Cloud Disk. Its upload speed is about 5MB/s:

The download speed is only about 200KB/s, which is extremely slow:

In comparison, the situation of Baidu Netdisk Youth Edition is very normal. Its upload speed can be maintained at around 3.5MB/s under the same network:

And it didn't limit my speed when downloading, the speed was stable at 25MB/s most of the time:

The upload speed of Alibaba Cloud Disk can reach 10MB/s:

Its download speed is surprisingly consistent with its upload speed, remaining stable at around 10MB/s throughout the process:

Then there is Tencent Weiyun.

Tencent Weiyun's upload speed is around 3.8MB/s:

Its download speed can reach 10MB/s:

As for Hecaiyun, its upload speed is a bit outrageous, jumping back and forth between 1.5MB/s and 100MB/s throughout the process, but the total video upload time is slower than Baidu Netdisk:

Fortunately, it is still very powerful when downloading, and the download speed can be maintained at around 11MB/s:

Among these online disks, Tianyi Cloud Disk performed the most exaggeratedly. It uploaded the video in the blink of an eye, and I didn't even have time to take a screenshot. Could it be that it has a special bonus for telecom broadband?

Tianyi Cloud Disk is working fine when downloading, and the download speed can be maintained above 10MB/s throughout the process:

In terms of their upload and download speeds, I am most satisfied with the performance of Alibaba Cloud Disk, Tianyi Cloud Disk and Baidu Netdisk Youth Edition, followed by Hecai Cloud and Tencent WeCloud, which have slightly slower upload speeds but unlimited download speeds.

As for Baidu Cloud Disk and Xunlei Cloud Disk, they are similar. They will limit the speed when downloading, which will be a problem for us when we need to download large files. As for functions, since Alibaba Cloud Disk and Baidu Cloud Youth Edition have not yet launched a membership mechanism, it is difficult for Shichao to guess what means these two cloud disks will use to limit the rights of free users.

Several other cloud storage services have already differentiated the rights and interests between ordinary users and members. Take Baidu Cloud Disk for example. If you don’t have a membership, you can’t use its ultra-fast download and double-speed video playback functions, and you can’t upload large files over 4G. Other functions don’t affect us much:

The restrictions of Xunlei Cloud Disk for ordinary users are mainly concentrated in download acceleration, large file upload and video playback clarity:

Hecaiyun and Tencent Weiyun only have 20G and 10G of storage space, but they will only give you a few terabytes of storage space after you become a member: Hecaiyun▼

Tencent Weiyun▼

Tianyi Cloud Disk also has many restrictions for ordinary users. Not only is the daily traffic limited to 2G, but the size of a single file upload is also limited to 2G, which seems a bit insufficient:

After comparing them, Shichao still thinks QQ is the best. A group has 10G of space, and you can create several groups with less than 200 people. The key is that the download speed is not limited. It is much better than these network disks.

As the saying goes, the one that beats you may not be the same industry, but may be cross-border, and the one that beats the network disk may not be another network disk, but may be other software. We should try other software that have network disk function instead of expecting these network disks to become more useful. Thank you for watching!
