In the latest Webmaster Help video Google’s Matt Cutts discusses the use of rel="nofollow" on internal links. This statement will break the previous SEOer's misconceptions.

Matt Cutts said: I've talked about this in the past, rel="nofollow" means that PageRank will not pass PR weight through the link, but it will also prevent us from crawling the web pages pointed to by its link, so the use of nofollow on external links is to prevent the transfer of weight.

However, in order to facilitate Googlebot to better crawl pages and ensure the normal flow and transfer of PageRank on the website, Google does not recommend using nofollow in internal links.

Matt Cutts continued: For example, landing pages and useless terms pages. These web pages are usually not of much value, but every web page must have such a landing link. Most webmasters will add a nofollow tag to the landing page, but usually it will affect Googlebot crawling and weight transfer. If you really don’t want Google to include a certain page, it is recommended to use noindex instead of nofollow.

To sum up, use nofollow for external links and don’t use it for internal links.

The difference between noindex and nofollow

Noindex and nofollow are attributes of the Meta robots tag, and robots.txt is a protocol file.
The noindex tag, like robots.txt, tells search engines not to index the page, that is, not to display the specified page in the search results.
nofollow simply tells the search engine not to follow the links on the page, not to pass on weight, and will not affect the inclusion of the page the link refers to.
