Renewing domain name for a long time is helpful for ranking

In a patent application filed by Google in December 2003 titled "Information Retrieval Based on Historical Data," Google mentioned that domain name renewal time can be used as one of the ranking factors. The logic is that a long renewal period indicates that the webmaster is serious about the website and is unlikely to use the domain name for a spam website. Usually, black hat SEOs who create spam websites will only register the domain name for one year to see how it works. If it doesn’t bring in traffic or is penalized, they will abandon the domain name.

Of course, no one knows whether the content mentioned in the patent is actually used in the ranking algorithm. But for truly serious companies and webmasters, there is nothing to lose by renewing the domain name for a few more years.
