5 steps to teach you how to build an operational knowledge system

It is said that the entry threshold for operations is low. After working for 1-2 years, you will gradually discover that operations involve many knowledge points and are updated and iterated quickly. So how can you form your own knowledge system? This article focuses on how to build a knowledge system and position oneself.

Operational knowledge system: Establish a systematic understanding of operations through tools and continuously improve them. The process of collecting, digesting, absorbing and innovating operational knowledge. The operation modules are roughly divided into: content operation, user operation, and promotion operation. How can we quickly master the knowledge system to build one of these modules?

The major studied, life background, and work experience will all lead to differences in the basic qualities and professional skills of operations practitioners. Basic qualities refer to the manifestation of personal ability, which includes basic items and key items. For example, knowledge management, time management, office skills, etc. are manifestations of basic abilities, while logical ability, market analysis, leadership, etc. are manifestations of key qualities.

Professional skills include operational capabilities and product capabilities, reflecting the professionalism of the position. Evaluation factors for operational capabilities include data analysis, operational plans, content management, etc.; product capabilities include market analysis, user analysis, product planning, etc.

How do you understand it specifically?

When interviewing fresh graduates who are preparing to enter the workplace, HR focuses on their abilities: basic qualities. They will focus on observing the knowledge structure, methodology and way of doing things of the applicants; when interviewing again after 1-2 years in the workplace, HR will focus on professional skills and whether they can take on the work of a certain module.

Then you can compare the picture below to position yourself and see which stage you are in.

Take myself as an example. I have been working in the operation position for 5 years and am a backbone of the team. In my self-assessment, I filled in P3-backbone.

In terms of basic qualities, the basic abilities are good, but in terms of key qualities, especially leadership and strategic planning, they are lacking. This is because my daily work consists of several modules, and I have not specifically cultivated my own vision. I am still at the tactical level and cannot look at problems from a product perspective.

In terms of professional skills, daily work focuses on originality, hot topics and activities, so they have a deep understanding of operational capabilities, but because the products have a strong monopoly advantage, they lack market analysis capabilities.

Summary: In order to advance from a backbone to an expert, you need to focus on improving leadership and product capabilities so that you can look at problems from a strategic perspective.

Let’s take a module that is easier to understand as an example. The operation work is divided into content operation, user operation, and promotion operation. Let’s use the promotion operation with a relatively low threshold to decompose the knowledge tree.

What problem should we solve first when we promote?

  1. User: What does it look like?
  2. Where does the traffic come from?
  3. How to get users from these places?

Target user analysis: description of user portraits, analysis of user markets, user classification, user usage scenarios, and core user needs;
