The interviewee of this interview is Xie Zhen , the speaker of the 2014 WOT Shenzhen Station <Mobile Game Development and Operation> Forum, who is currently working as a client software engineer at Lilith Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.

Xie Zhen - Client Software Engineer at Lilith Technology (Shanghai) Co., Ltd.

Xie Zhen's speech at this forum is titled "Resource Management Makes Games More Shining", which includes resource classification, resource management, resource optimization, expansion and other aspects to comprehensively analyze the essence of resource management in games, so that everyone can understand the essence of game resources, manage game resources simply and conveniently, optimize package size and running speed, optimize DLC processes, difficulties and experience sharing, etc. In order to let everyone know more about Xie Zhen's ideas on mobile games in advance, 51CTO specially conducted this interview, and the interview transcript is as follows:

51CTO: What do you think of the current development trend of the domestic mobile game industry? What are the key factors affecting the development of the entire industry? What problems exist?

Xie Zhen: The mobile game industry is in a stage of explosive growth. First, due to its amazing market, the statistics of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology show that by the end of May 2014, the number of mobile phone users in China had reached 1.256 billion; second, the profitability of mobile games has been confirmed, from foreign COC to domestic My Name is MT and Dota Legend fully illustrate this point; third, the low-cost development of mobile games has enabled mobile games to spread rapidly. Generally, a mobile game development team of 5-10 people is enough, which has obvious advantages over terminal games and web games. There will be more and more small startups in mobile games, and Lilith Technology has become a model of this type. At the same time, low cost and high income have also attracted the attention of large companies. EA, Blizzard, Tencent, Shanda, Giant, etc. have all increased their investment.

But at the same time, many problems have emerged in the mobile game industry. Plagiarism seems to have become the most concerned issue. After a good game comes out, a large number of companies will copy it. After COC became popular in 2012, a large number of companies imitated and produced similar games. In 2014, many companies imitated Dota Legend.

51CTO: What are the inevitable factors behind a successful mobile game?

Xie Zhen: First, a team that trusts each other. Game development is a very difficult process. Only when everyone trusts each other can we go further. Second, a stable financial foundation. Who can guarantee that they have a team like Jack Ma? The funds do not need to be too strong, but at least they can guarantee that there will be no problems within a project cycle. Third, innovation. Only a brand new gameplay can attract enough users. Fourth, the team's development capabilities. The game screen determines whether players will play the game. The stability of the game content and version determines how far players can go.

51CTO: What is the current relationship between domestic channels and game developers?

Xie Zhen: I think it is a mutually beneficial relationship. If a channel has more advantageous product support, it will attract more users to join. At the same time, an excellent product will shine more brightly with the channel's huge user base and strong promotion capabilities. They have a common goal, profit, but there are also some contradictions, ***, and the problem of profit distribution. Both parties hope to gain more benefits and need to find a balance. Even the Apple App Store, which has a fixed proportion of profit sharing, will have such problems. For example, excellent products may get greater promotion for free, but developers will be restricted in product release and other aspects. Second, channels pay more attention to the short-term benefits of products, while developers pay more attention to (or should pay more attention to) long-term benefits. Developers hope to establish a brand effect and may develop some "conscientious products."

51CTO: What do you think will be the trend of the mobile game market in the next two years?

Xie Zhen: First, the mobile game market will be even more popular, both large companies and small startups have invested in the mobile game market; second, there will be more and more high-quality games. On the one hand, large companies and investors are eyeing this huge "cake", and the development budget will increase greatly, which will promote the improvement of game quality; on the other hand, with the improvement of smartphone performance and development technology, a large number of high-quality PC games will be ported to mobile platforms one after another.

51CTO: What experiences or suggestions would you share with entrepreneurs working in the mobile gaming industry?

Xie Zhen: First, a game is not made by one person, it requires talents from all walks of life, so don’t just do it by yourself, find your own team. There are indeed successful cases of independent developers, but the success rate is extremely low and is only short-lived; second, do your best and trust others. To gain recognition from others, you must shine in what you are good at. Don’t want to do everything, or you will end up doing nothing well. Everyone in the team has their own strengths. If you choose them, please trust them, otherwise please leave. This team doesn’t need you or is not suitable for you; third, sharing is a virtue, sharing is a selfless contribution, but it is also quite rewarding. You will get recognition from others, you will receive suggestions and error feedback from others, and the most important thing is that you can learn more knowledge and enhance your own value.
