Original question:

What computer technology skills do programmers have that would amaze non-programmers?

For example, there are skills such as being able to use cmd commands to query the various states of the computer, being able to use shortcut keys to instantly switch window pages... Of course, these are simple skills... Are there any other high-end skills that are unknown to the public that you can show off? Are there any websites or forums where I can get in touch with these high-end skills? I used to think that studying computer science was a difficult process.

My roommate can set the computer to automatically shut down in cmd, which is awesome. I think it’s awesome to use a program to switch between browsers and software in seconds… etc. etc.

@mu peng:

When I was in college, all the computers in my department were running Windows 2k.

We were working on a project at night, so a buddy and I were working on data in the bungalow downstairs. By around nine o'clock, there was no progress, so we went out to take a look. The department building opposite was completely dark, with only one room lit.

My buddy said that his roommate "Zhu XX" was in that room and might be watching pornographic websites.

We are depressed, but he is happy. This is not good. In the spirit of upholding justice and purifying the Internet environment, we decided to stand up.

At that time, Windows had a net send command that could display a dialog box on the other machine, similar to this:

We changed the name of our computer to "Network Center" and sent a message to the machine on the third floor.

Message from "Network Center" to "XXXX":

"Student Zhu XX, we have detected that you are browsing unhealthy websites. We have recorded it and will notify the department office to handle it."

Soon, the lights upstairs went out, and a figure hurried out of the building and disappeared into the night.

When I returned to the dormitory, Zhu was sitting on the edge of the bed smoking, with a serious look on his face, as if he was worried. After a long while, he said,

"How do they know my name?"

@Tim Chen:

Many years ago, we provided 24x7 technical support for Windows Server to corporate users. If a customer's server had a problem, such as a crash, they could call us at any time. We called it Severity A, which stands for *** level response.

I was on shift that day, but someone asked me to play football, so I went to play happily. Halfway through the game, the phone rang, and I thought it was over. A customer said that he restarted the server and now every time he started it, the blue screen would appear and he couldn't enter the system. He was going to kneel down if the server couldn't be restored.

Later, I told my friend that I would go to guard the door for a while, and answer the customer's phone call while guarding the door. I learned that the blue screen code is 0x7b. Well, this is easy. The direct reason is that the system cannot read the boot disk after entering the kernel. Generally, the hard disk driver cannot be loaded correctly.

Then I asked the customer to copy the system registry file to another machine and open it with regedit, and then read me the entries related to the hard disk device driver one by one. I memorized them in my mind and ran a troubleshooting program in my brain. Finally, I found that there was an incomplete configuration item for the filter driver. It was stated somewhere that it should be mounted on the hard disk device, but my device was not equipped with it. This is usually caused by a bug in the installation program of this driver.

After finding the problem, we instructed the customer to delete the incomplete driver device information. Because this driver was installed by a disk backup software, it didn't matter if it was removed. Then we put the modified registry file back to the server and the result was resolved.

The client was very grateful, but I didn’t dare tell him that I was also guarding the goal and didn’t lose the ball. Later, there was a thank-you letter.

@Jianchi Chen:

1. Helped someone exit vim;

2. Use windows+arrow keys to move the window position (Actually the person who was shocked by this is a 10x programmer, but he was originally a Mac user so...)

3. Use Ctrl+Shift+T to reopen the window you just closed in Chrome;

4. Use a line of Perl regular expression to help the student list all the numbers in his XX folder

Anonymous user:

Don’t want to enter lengthy file paths bit by bit in cmd?

Just drag this file to the CMD window!

You will find that the path fills itself up.

If there are spaces, quotation marks will be automatically added.
