The Apple Music streaming music service, which launched a few weeks ago, was initially praised by many technology industry journalists. Well-known blogger Jim Dalrymple praised Apple Music, saying "I am completely fascinated by it." However, Dallip has already slammed the app in a blog post, even calling Apple Music "a nightmare." A few weeks after its release, criticism of Apple Music has become a consensus among industry insiders. They believe that Apple Music needs more improvement. The crux of the matter is that Apple needs to strip the company's apps, or at least some of them, from iOS upgrades. Apple integrated Apple Music in the iOS 8.4 update. However, integrating individual apps into system updates is a disadvantage. This means that these individual apps can only be updated when Apple releases major updates. Therefore, users may have to wait for weeks or months for minor issues in individual apps to be fixed. App developers like Medium and Slack can fix app vulnerabilities as soon as they are discovered and release updates. In many cases, users will automatically receive the updates without even realizing they are there. Apple lacks this flexibility when it comes to system-bundled apps. Imagine that Apple Music had a serious bug that caused the system to crash every time it was launched. To fix this problem, Apple would need to release a system-wide update. This would mean system restarts and long waits. In 2015, such a scenario would undoubtedly be ridiculous. On the other hand, users have begun to hesitate whether to upgrade to the latest version of iOS. The speed of iOS 8's popularity has reflected this. In this case, it will be more difficult to fix the Apple Music vulnerability on all devices through system updates. We can give another example. Apple Maps in iOS 9 provides transportation transfer information guides, but most users will not be able to use this feature until this fall. In fact, Apple can update the map application through the App Store and release this feature faster. Similar to apps downloaded from the App Store, system-bundled apps also need to be updated regularly. Apple's current mechanism limits the speed of updates and creates a disappointing situation. The situation of Apple Music is a good example. In order to fix all the problems listed by Dallip, Apple needs to make a complete system update package, such as iOS 8.4.1. If Apple Music is a standalone app, Apple can more easily fix the problem and release the installation package without causing any interruption to users. The American technology blog 9to5Mac also recently pointed out that Apple can use the App Store to optimize the current mechanism. At the same time, Google has long since stripped individual apps from the Android system, and these apps can provide independent services. Currently, users can update input keyboards, messaging apps, and even dialing keyboards without upgrading the Android system. Apple is not fast in developing key system-bundled apps, such as maps, podcasts, and music. It is unlikely that Apple will frequently upgrade the entire system just to update certain apps. This will make users unhappy. App developers already have many tools to quickly iterate on versions, but Apple's model limits the speed at which the company can develop its own apps. |
