The China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC) released the 44th "Statistical Report on the Development of China's Internet". As of June 2019, the number of Internet users in my country reached 854 million, an increase of 25.98 million from the end of last year, and the Internet penetration rate increased to 61.2%.

More than 73.7% of Internet users are urban residents, and there are still 541 million non-Internet users, mainly in rural areas, accounting for more than 60%. The main reason for their Internet access is the lack of Internet skills and insufficient education. Of course, a small number of them are too young or too old. From another perspective, rural areas still have great development potential, and finding users in the sinking market has long been a consensus among manufacturers.

Young people are still the main force in the online world, with those aged 10-39 accounting for 65.1%, of which those aged 20-29 account for the highest proportion, at 24.9%. The proportion of netizens aged 50 and above has also increased to 13.6%. It is no wonder that manufacturers have set their sights on the "silver generation".

The proportion of netizens who use mobile phones to access the Internet is as high as 99.1%, which shows the huge role that smart phones play in popularizing the Internet. The popularity of Internet data packages and unlimited data packages also shows the great demand for mobile Internet access. The report pointed out that the average monthly mobile data usage of Chinese users is as high as 7.2G. Although the Internet speed is not among the highest in the world, the data usage is 1.2 times the global average.

A lot of this 7.2G must have been contributed to video and social applications such as TikTok and WeChat. A recent report from Aurora Big Data showed that Tencent and Toutiao applications accounted for more than half of the total user usage time. The CNNIC report also showed that the scale of my country's online video users has reached 759 million.

The progress of network infrastructure has obviously brought development space for the Internet's rich media content. The immersive experience brought by information flow is also further depriving people of their attention. In the first half of 2019, the average weekly Internet usage time of Chinese netizens was 27.9 hours, which means that people spend an average of nearly 4 hours a day on their mobile phones and computers. Communication applications, online videos and short videos have become the three major time killers, occupying 14.5%, 13.4% and 11.5% of the time respectively.

In terms of the statistics on the number of apps installed per capita, CNNIC data shows that netizens aged 15-19 have installed the most apps, reaching 66, followed by those aged 20-29, with 54, and those aged 60 and above have only 33. Overall, this is not much different from the data released by Aurora Big Data not long ago that the average number of apps installed by Chinese netizens is 56.

The usage rate of search engines has remained stable at 81%-83% in recent years, but the number of users has been growing. As of June, its scale reached 695 million. However, the growth of search engine advertising business continued to decline, and the growth rate of related revenue of Baidu and Sogou both dropped from double digits to single digits. At the same time, ByteDance also launched its search business, which brought greater challenges to the first two.
