Hong Kong man arrested for holding Hong Kong independence flag

According to Hong Kong's "Oriental Daily News", when the Hong Kong police stopped a man on Paterson Street this afternoon, they found a "Hong Kong Independence" flag in his backpack and arrested him on suspicion of violating the Hong Kong National Security Law. The man became the first person to be arrested since the implementation of the National Security Law.

Specific process

The report said that at around 9 o'clock this morning, a group of riot police were stationed outside the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. At around 10 o'clock, water cannon vehicles and armored vehicles arrived at the scene for security. It is unknown whether this is related to the deployment of the later parade. By noon, demonstrators began to gather at the scene, some waving American flags.

By around 1 p.m., more than 200 people gathered outside Sogo in Causeway Bay. The police set up a cordon at the scene and raised a blue flag to warn people on the scene. During the period, Legislative Council member Yin Zhexin was suspected of speaking through a megaphone. The police asked him to put away the loudspeaker but failed. A dispute broke out between the two sides. A police officer sprayed pepper spray at Yin and pinned him to the ground to subdue him. He then locked his hands with cable ties and was arrested and taken away on suspicion of "obstructing police officers in the execution of their duties."

At 1:23 pm, the police advanced to Great George Street, where former Legislative Council member Lee Cheuk-yan had an argument with the police officers on the scene, and the police sprayed pepper spray to disperse him. At the same time, when the police stopped a man on Paterson Street, they found a "Hong Kong Independence" flag in his backpack and arrested him on suspicion of violating the Hong Kong National Security Law. The man became the first person to be arrested since the implementation of the National Security Law.

The police pointed out that a crowd gathered and shouted loudly in the area of Tung Point Road in Causeway Bay. The police issued several warnings to the crowd at the scene, clearly pointing out that carrying out related activities may violate the crime of unauthorized assembly under the Public Security Ordinance. However, the crowd still refused to leave, so the police took enforcement action. In order to effectively maintain public order at the scene, the police have temporarily closed Paterson Street, East Point Road and Great George Street, prohibiting the public from entering the relevant streets.

The police asked those gathering to stop gathering and leave immediately, and citizens should not go to participate in related activities. The police will enforce the law strictly and take decisive arrest actions.

Hong Kong National Security Law

The "Hong Kong National Security Law" was promulgated and officially came into effect at 11 pm on June 30. The Hong Kong police set up a special department to handle national security affairs and made the highest level of deployment on related matters. The Hong Kong police solemnly warn that waving "Hong Kong independence" flags or banners, shouting "Hong Kong independence" slogans or broadcasting "independence" speeches, whether explicitly or implicitly, will violate the Hong Kong National Security Law. The police can take action and enforce the law decisively without prior warning. Hong Kong police also said that since the theme of the law is to safeguard national security, the above-mentioned acts are also illegal if they contain separatist words such as "Taiwan independence".
