Interpretation of APP visual rules: What are the Gestalt psychology rules!
We often hear some design experts share with us that these APP icons and APP interface elements do not conform to the visual design standards according to the five laws of Gestalt psychology. It also doesn’t conform to user psychology. Therefore, in order to popularize this rule which plays a large role in the visual design of our APP, we will further explain the Gestalt. I hope design buddies can understand what it is.

Many designers today prefer to apply one or more of the principles of Gestalt psychology. This move not only makes the design more dynamic, but also makes it easier to attract viewers' attention than ordinary designs. Being good at applying Gestalt design principles can better reflect the designer's level and style. First , what are the principles of Gestalt psychology theory? Gestalt is the transliteration of the German word Gestalt, which is often translated into English as form or shape. Therefore, the starting point of Gestalt psychology research is "shape". But the "shape" here is not just the general form or shape, but also includes the whole of experience organized by perceptual activities, which is also translated into "gestalt" in Chinese. Therefore, the Gestalt psychology theory rules are also called Gestalt rules. It holds that the whole determines the nature of the part, while the part is subject to the whole. The core of Gestalt psychology: finding the simplest and most direct way to interpret incomplete visual information.

Gestalt psychology is a discipline that explores humans' cognitive responses to images. It is an important branch of psychology and a very important and basic skill for visual image designers. It originated in Germany and was further developed in the United States into the current Gestalt psychology laws. The significance lies in: Gestalt psychology principles emphasize the role of the whole, pattern, organization, structure, etc. in studying the cognitive process of perception and higher-level psychological processes, and pay attention to people's initiative in organizing and interpreting sensory information input. These have become the basic viewpoints of modern cognitive psychology. If you hear some experts and masters in the design circle mention Gestalt principles or Gestalt principles when giving sharing lectures in the future, you will know what they mean. The Gestalt Principles of Second Gestalt Psychology This is the Gestalt rule of design that many design experts have compiled for us after revising the basics of Gestalt psychology. 1. Proximity. Parts that are close together tend to form a whole. 2. Similarity. Parts that are similar in some respect tend to form a whole. 3. Closure. Parts that belong to each other and constitute a closed entity tend to form a whole. 4. Simplicity Parts with simple graphic features of symmetry, regularity, and smoothness tend to form a whole. The above organizational laws are the so-called "Gestalt Laws" (Law of Organization), which are the research results of psychologists in the field of cognition. Gestalt means "whole, shape" in German, so Gestalt theory is also called "gestalt theory". In fact, for designers, it is enough to fully understand these four Gestalt laws. But the original founder of Gestalt psychology proposed five laws: Proximity Similarity Closure Continuity Simplicity Warm reminder: The above four Gestalt laws and five Gestalt psychology laws are based on the same principle. There is no conflict, just different considerations.

Third, a few points of knowledge that you need to remember According to the laws of Gestalt psychology, people are willing to habitually remember and recognize relatively simple things. It can also explain why many users now like minimalist design works. Or a minimalist linear icon. This is also the minimalist style that is popular in the design industry today. Teach you how to view the Gestalt law: It means seeing all the elements as a whole. This action of gathering visual elements into a single image is actually a kind of "gestalt". It’s good as long as it looks comfortable and has design recognition, consistency and unity.
