Drinking a cup of coffee has become a waking ritual for more and more people. The reason why coffee is so popular is not only because it is refreshing, but also because coffee itself is a healthy drink. Many studies have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between coffee and health and pointed out that drinking coffee in moderation can reduce the risk of certain cancers, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. However, there are some situations in which coffee is not suitable for some people, especially the following 9 groups of people should pay special attention. Image source: freepik.com 01 Patients with sleep disorders Caffeine has a central nervous system stimulating effect, which is what we often call a refreshing effect. This is why many office workers and postgraduate entrance exam candidates rely on coffee. However, due to genetic factors, different people have different sensitivities to caffeine. Some people have a weak gene for metabolizing coffee, so it takes a long time to metabolize even a little bit of caffeine. Even the coffee you drink in the morning is still dancing in your brain at night. Therefore, if you have problems such as insomnia or sleep disorders, try not to drink coffee, or drink less coffee. It is best not to drink coffee in the afternoon or before going to bed. By the way, people who are prone to insomnia are advised to drink less milk tea (milk tea contains a lot of caffeine). 02 People who are frightened and anxious Coffee may indeed trigger sudden episodes of panic and anxiety. But don't panic. Studies have found that high doses of caffeine (400 to 800 mg per day, about 5 to 9 cups of coffee) may produce negative effects, such as anxiety, tension, nervousness, panic, and tremors. Image source: giphy As long as you don't exceed 300-400 mg of caffeine (about 4-5 cups of coffee), you won't have these problems. I'm not a huge coffee lover and don't usually drink that much, so don't worry too much. 03 People with arrhythmia Some people experience discomfort such as accelerated heartbeat, nausea, and dizziness after drinking coffee. In fact, this is "caffeine intolerance." This is a normal phenomenon and is related to the individual's sensitivity to caffeine. Some people are more sensitive to caffeine and metabolize it more slowly, so drinking coffee can cause arrhythmia, increased heartbeat, palpitations, etc., but some people are fine. Moreover, different people react differently - some have this problem after drinking one cup, but some people are fine after drinking four or five cups. So, this does not mean saying goodbye to coffee, but you should adjust the frequency and amount of coffee drinking according to your own situation. Image source: giphy If you have irregular heartbeat or palpitations, try not to drink, or drink less. For example, if you used to drink 2 cups a day, you might as well reduce it to 1 cup a day. 04 Patients with iron deficiency anemia The polyphenols, phytic acid and other plant components in coffee do affect the absorption of iron. For those with iron deficiency anemia, they can drink less coffee. One study found that when caffeinated beverages were consumed with food, a cup of coffee reduced iron absorption from a hamburger meal by 39%, while tea reduced it by 64%. Regular coffee drinking may also affect iron storage levels. One large study found that among older adults, one cup of coffee per week was associated with a 1% decrease in ferritin levels. Image source: freepik.com Recommendations for people with iron deficiency anemia: Try not to drink coffee while eating. It is recommended to drink it 1 hour after a meal. Coffee only affects "non-heme" iron and has no effect on "heme" iron. Just eat two more pieces of lean meat. For healthy people, drinking coffee does not affect the absorption of iron and there is no need to worry about causing iron deficiency anemia. 05 Acid reflux patients Some studies have found that coffee may make acid reflux symptoms worse. However, this conclusion is still controversial. Some large-scale meta-studies have found that neither coffee nor tea (caffeine) has a direct relationship with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Moreover, there may be many causes of gastroesophageal reflux, and it is not particularly clear what the cause is. It is recommended that you follow your own feelings. If your stomach function is not very good and you experience discomfort such as acid reflux after drinking coffee, then drink less or no coffee. Image source: giphy 06 Irritable bowel syndrome patients Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal functional disorder that refers to a syndrome of persistent or intermittent abdominal pain, bloating, abnormal bowel habits and stool characteristics without morphological and biochemical abnormalities. Some studies have found that caffeine can increase diarrhea. For example, a Swedish study showed that 39% of patients with irritable bowel syndrome experienced worsening intestinal symptoms, including diarrhea and stomach pain, after drinking coffee. However, there is no direct evidence that reducing caffeine can improve symptoms. Image source: freepik.com The pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome is not very clear and is related to multiple factors. Currently, the more recognized causes include intestinal infections and mental and psychological disorders. Diet will also have a certain impact; but the impact is relatively small, and controlling diet is not the only way to solve it. The advice for this group of people is still to follow your own feelings. If you experience gastrointestinal discomfort after drinking coffee, drink less or no coffee. 07 Hypertensive patients The prevalence of hypertension among adults worldwide exceeds 30%, and there has been much controversy regarding the effects of coffee drinking on blood pressure and the risk of arterial hypertension. Current research suggests that regular coffee drinking does not increase the risk of high blood pressure. Moreover, coffee contains a variety of antioxidant ingredients, such as chlorogenic acid, cafestol, etc. These antioxidants are also beneficial for cardiovascular and blood pressure control. The latest meta-analysis results show that moderate and habitual coffee drinking (1 to 3 cups a day) does not have an adverse effect on blood pressure for most people, and may even reduce the risk of arterial hypertension and cardiovascular-related all-cause mortality. However, some studies have found that some people experience a short period of elevated blood pressure after drinking coffee, usually within 3 hours. Image source: giphy I would like to remind everyone that for patients with hypertension who do not drink coffee often, it is better to drink coffee in moderation and not drink too much at one time. 08 Pregnant women In recent years, newer evidence has shown that drinking coffee during pregnancy may be associated with an increased risk of spontaneous abortion. Generally speaking, we do not encourage pregnant women to drink coffee, but this does not mean that they cannot drink it at all. If you really want to drink it, you can drink it. If you have the habit of drinking coffee or want to satisfy your craving, you need to control your caffeine intake, which is about half of that of ordinary people. It is generally believed that it is okay to drink a small amount of coffee during pregnancy (no more than 150-300 mg of caffeine per day, about 2 cups). You can also choose "decaffeinated" coffee (decaffeinated coffee). 09 child Children and adolescents are still developing, and the effects of caffeine on their nervous and cardiovascular systems are not fully understood. Caffeine may disrupt children's sleep, and many coffee drinks also lead to excessive sugar intake. Therefore, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children and adolescents do not drink coffee. Therefore, children should try not to drink coffee. As parents, we should also help children control their intake of coffee, tea and other caffeinated beverages. But this does not mean that it is harmful for children to drink coffee. There is no need to worry if they drink a small amount occasionally. It is generally believed that it is safe for children and adolescents to consume no more than 2.5 to 3 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight per day (about 75 to 100 mg of caffeine for a child or adolescent weighing 30 kg), which is about a cup of coffee. Image source: freepik.com In fact, according to the current consensus in the scientific community, more and more research evidence supports that coffee is more beneficial than harmful to health. But after all, everyone's physical condition is different. Those who don't like coffee or feel uncomfortable after drinking it don't need to force themselves to drink it. For those who like to drink coffee, they should also pay attention to the amount and type. If you want to drink it, the first choice is coffee without any additions - most of the research supporting the health benefits of coffee refers to black coffee without any additions. Many instant three-in-one coffees or fancy coffees on the market have a lot of sugar and non-dairy creamer added in, which is not healthy. If you think black coffee is too bitter, you can add some milk or milk powder. Image source: freepik.com So how much coffee is appropriate? At present, the scientific community believes that healthy adults should consume no more than 210-400 mg of caffeine per day. Taking a medium cup of American coffee (about 355 ml) as an example, this is about 1-2 cups per day. In addition to coffee itself, many beverages in life also contain caffeine, such as cola, tea, and milk tea. If you drink these beverages, remember to drink less coffee. Finally, I would like to remind everyone that everyone’s tolerance to caffeine is different. Some people can drink several cups without any problem, but some people feel uncomfortable after just a few sips. So, I still want to remind everyone to follow your own feelings. After all, you always know your own feelings best. If after drinking coffee you experience insomnia, anxiety, tremors, stomach discomfort, increased heart rate, headache, nausea, irritability and other discomforts, it means you may have exceeded your tolerance level and you should make appropriate adjustments.
