Is it reasonable to use myopia rate as a double reduction assessment indicator?

On the eve of the two sessions, some people suggested that the myopia rate should be used as an important indicator for the "double reduction" assessment, and said that after the implementation of the "double reduction" policy, the myopia rate of primary and secondary school students in Shanghai has dropped for the first time in recent years. So, is myopia really caused by the heavy workload of children?

Today I will talk to you about why children become nearsighted, the basic principles of myopia, and how to deal with myopia?

01. Why do children become nearsighted?

I personally think that the suggestion of using myopia rate as a double reduction assessment indicator is actually somewhat scientifically problematic. Why? Because the logic chain is problematic. The logic of the person who suggested it is: the more learning, the higher the myopia rate.

However, this is not the case with myopia. This is also a misunderstanding of many parents, who believe that studying causes myopia.

In fact, the most important factor for myopia is the length of time spent using the eyes. For example, the following figure is a study of different ways of using the eyes and the length of time spent using the eyes.

It can be seen that whether it is doing homework, watching TV, or using the computer. As long as the time you use your eyes increases, it will inevitably lead to an increase in myopia.

Therefore, it can be seen that the key factor is not what business you are engaged in, but your eye habits.

02. Basic principles of myopia

This can actually be derived from the basic principles of myopia.

In a normal person's eye, light rays converge on the retina to form an image.

However, if you use your eyes for a long time, coupled with light problems, the result is eye muscle fatigue. As time goes on, the lens of the eye also begins to deform to capture images. At this time, true myopia occurs. (The cause of myopia is not completely clear at present. There are also genetic factors, as well as the problem of insufficient light causing hormones and eye axis changes mentioned by other netizens)

But in general, it is believed that the reason is that what you need to see does not match the length of your eye, which eventually leads to myopia over the years.

That's why I say that whether you are under great pressure from studying, reading books and doing homework for a long time, or playing games on your phone for a long time, it's the same, it's an inducement.

In today's screen world, even if students are not studying, they are either playing with their phones or computers. And students are at a developmental stage, so they are more susceptible to these factors than adults.

In this case, it is actually not appropriate to use it to measure the double reduction effect.

03. How to deal with myopia?

So, what is the solution to myopia?

The National Health Commission has issued the "Guidelines for the Prevention and Treatment of Myopia", pointing out that the environmental factors are as follows

The above reasons are the factors that cause myopia, so dealing with these factors is actually a better assessment method.

For example, a typical one is: outdoor activities.

When people interact outdoors, the long-term eye fatigue is actually reduced.

Therefore, if we want to measure the double reduction, it may be more effective to use outdoor activities, such as physical fitness. (However, in a darker way, some places may make things worse by not only requiring learning but also outdoor activities, which would be a story of swallowing the whole thing)

In addition, there are some other problems. Using physical diseases to measure some social indicators may lead to certain discrimination. I believe everyone understands this, so I will not go into details.
