Strong winds break records, hail covers the ground! This year's most intense severe convective weather is coming, how to prevent it

Starting from yesterday afternoon (April 11), due to the convergence of cold and warm air, many parts of my country experienced the most intense convective weather this year.

Strong winds blew in Chongqing late at night, waking many people from their sleep. From 8 p.m. on April 11 to 1:30 a.m. on April 12, several districts and counties in Chongqing issued a total of 42 weather warnings, covering strong winds, heavy rains, thunder and lightning, hail, etc.

From 20:00 to 23:00 on April 11, severe convective weather such as thunderstorms, strong winds, hail, and short-term heavy rainfall also occurred in Ziyang City, Sichuan Province. On the evening of the 11th, Anyue encountered the strongest wind since 1951. According to data released by the local meteorological department, the urban area of Anyue, Ziyang, had a maximum wind speed of 37.4m/s (level 13, at 21:57). The relevant person in charge of the Ziyang Meteorological Observatory said that this wind speed is very rare in the area and has broken the extreme value. It is the maximum value since Anyue has meteorological records since the Anyue Meteorological Observatory was established in 1957.

According to the real-time meteorological data from the Central Meteorological Observatory, the hourly precipitation in Anyue County reached 66.2 mm at 23:00 on the 11th, ranking first in the country in the same period. According to the pictures taken by local residents, the wind was strong in some areas, the roads were flooded, some vehicles were flooded, some residents' windows were blown down, and the color steel shed on the roof was blown off.

In addition, thunderstorms and strong winds occurred in southern Liaoning, central and southern Hebei, northern and southern Shanxi, central and northern and southern Shandong, central and northern Henan, central Shaanxi, eastern and southern Sichuan, western Chongqing, and southwestern Yunnan, and hail occurred in central and northern Liaoning, southern Hebei, and other places.

Why is severe convective weather so intense in the north and south?

Zhang Juan, a meteorological analyst at China Weather Net, analyzed that in the early stage, most parts of my country were dominated by warm air, and the temperature rose sharply. Many places were abnormally warmer than the same period of previous years. When the cold air arrived, the energy accumulated in the atmosphere was stimulated, and this time the cold and warm air were a strong collision, and neither side was willing to give in, so it triggered large-scale severe convective weather.

Although there are severe convective weather in both the north and south, the causes are slightly different this time. The severe convection in the north is mainly caused by the fierce confrontation between cold and warm air. Due to the general water vapor conditions, thunderstorms, gale and hail are the main weather. In the south, in addition to the confrontation between cold and warm air, there is also the eastward movement of the southern branch trough, coupled with the help of the low-level southwest vortex, which leads to short-term heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong instantaneous gale, thunderstorms and other severe convective weather.

Which places will experience severe convective weather in the future?

As the cold air continues to move southward and the southwest vortex gradually moves eastward, scattered severe convective weather may also occur in areas such as Jiangnan.

According to the Central Meteorological Observatory, today, the temperature in central and southern North China, Huanghuai, Jianghuai, central and western Hubei, northern Hunan, Chongqing, and northern Guizhou will drop by 4 to 8 degrees Celsius. The temperature in central Henan and central Shandong will drop by more than 10 degrees Celsius, and locally by more than 12 degrees Celsius. At the same time, there will be 4 to 5 winds in Huanghuai, Jianghuai, and eastern Jianghan, with gusts of 6 to 7. The public in the above-mentioned areas should take precautions.

Severe convective weather is one of the most difficult types of weather to predict. It comes suddenly, changes quickly, and is extremely destructive.
