So many snails?

The giant African snail usually only dares to move around in wet places in the grass. If it gets on the road, it may dry out or get sunburned. It only dares to crawl around when it's wet after the rain.

Their mucus or feces may carry many parasites and pathogens, especially the Guangzhou roundworm, which can cause diseases such as meningoencephalitis or meningitis.

Gan Liqin from the Health Education and Promotion Department of Longgang District Center for Disease Control and Prevention said that the infection rate of giant snails is high. According to relevant literature reports:

In Guangzhou: The infection rate of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in the brown cloud agate snails was 27.3%, and the infection rate was 72 snails/snail;

In Shenzhen: The infection rate of Angiostrongylus cantonensis in brown cloud agate snails was 31.0%, and the infection rate ranged from 89.2 to 154.2 snails per snail.

According to relevant research, the larvae of Guangzhou roundworm can be found in the bodies, excrement and mucus left by infected giant snails while crawling.

Humans can be infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis through the following ways:

① Eating infected snail meat raw or half-cooked;

② Close contact between wounds and mucous membranes and infected snails;

③ Consuming salads, fruits and vegetables, and water contaminated by infected snails.

According to experts, after infecting the human body, the Guangzhou roundworm can migrate between various organs of the human body, invading the central nervous system, lungs, eyes, etc., causing meningitis, meningoencephalitis, visual damage and even blindness.

In March 2018, domestic and foreign media reported that a 19-year-old rugby player in Sydney, Australia, was infected with Angiostrongylus cantonensis after eating raw slugs, becoming paralyzed in all four limbs and eventually died of complications.

However, although Guangzhou roundworm is terrible, we can stay away from it as long as we do the following:

① Do not eat raw snail meat;

② Avoid direct contact of broken skin and mucous membranes with the excrement, mucus, and tissue of the "giant snail";

③ Be sure to clean your hands after touching the brown cloud agate snail;

④ Pay attention to the separation of snails and food to prevent vegetables, fruits, salads and other foods from being contaminated by snails.
