The world is experiencing rare high temperatures

How hot is this summer?

Continued high temperatures, severe drought, wildfires, melting icebergs - the temperatures continue to hit record highs, making the "fried egg on a manhole cover" experiment, which has been used for many years to test the surface temperature, a thing of the past.

On social media, a large number of food bloggers smeared seasoning on 2 cm thick raw steaks, put them in vacuum bags, and placed them on the balcony in the open air. After 2 hours, they would get a cooked steak, to show that the local area is experiencing rare high temperatures.

Also in my country, this summer, many places in the south have continued to experience high temperatures, and the "furnace" mode has been in standby mode for a long time. According to reports, many people in Zhejiang, Sichuan, Henan and other places have been diagnosed with heat stroke, and even deaths have occurred.

On the 17th, the latest data released by the National Climate Center of the China Meteorological Administration showed that the comprehensive intensity of the current high temperature heat wave events in my country has reached the strongest since complete meteorological records were kept in 1961.

According to the analysis given by the China Meteorological Administration, the characteristics of this high temperature process are long duration, wide range, high intensity and extremeness.

This round of high temperatures lasted 64 days, the longest since 1961

Since the beginning of this summer (June 1 to August 15), the average number of high-temperature days across the country has reached 12 days, which is about 5 days more than the same period in previous years.

Among them, the number of high temperature days in North China, East China, Southwest China and other regions is generally more than 20 days, and the number of high temperature days in Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, Chongqing and other places exceeds 30 days.

As of August 15, this high temperature process has lasted for 64 days, surpassing the previous longest period of 62 days in 2013 and becoming the longest duration since 1961.

The daily maximum temperature at 262 weather stations broke historical records

At present, the national meteorological observation stations have monitored 1,680 stations with temperatures above 35°C and 1,426 stations with temperatures above 37°C, both of which are the second highest in history, second only to 2017.

In addition, a total of 914 national meteorological stations across the country had daily maximum temperatures that reached the standards for extreme high temperature events. The daily maximum temperatures at 262 national meteorological stations in Hebei, Shaanxi, Sichuan, Hubei, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Qinghai and other places remained at or exceeded historical extremes, exceeding 187 stations in 2013 and 133 stations in 2017.

This round of high temperatures above 40°C covers the largest area in history

Data shows that the coverage area of this round of high temperatures above 40°C is the largest in history, reaching 1.365 million square kilometers, far exceeding the 776,000 square kilometers in 2013 and 993,000 square kilometers in 2017. Many cities set high temperature records, such as Zhushan in Hubei Province with 44.6°C, Beibei in Chongqing with 44.5°C, Fengjie with 44.4°C, Wuxi with 44.0°C, Lingshou in Hebei Province with 44.2°C, Gaocheng with 44.1°C, Zhengding with 44.0°C, and Yanjin in Yunnan with 44.0°C. The daily maximum temperatures in these cities all reached 44°C or above.

What is the reason for this round of high temperatures?

Gao Ge, Chief of Meteorological Services of China Meteorological Administration, said:

One is the influence of abnormal atmospheric circulation. In this summer, the global atmospheric system showed consistent control of the warm high-pressure circulation system, forming a large-scale global warm high-pressure belt. Under the influence of the high-pressure system, hot air will remain on the ground and cannot dissipate, making the place very hot.

Second, the La Niña climate event that spanned three years contributed to the abnormal atmospheric circulation.

The third is the amplification and regulation of global warming. In fact, the instability of the global climate system has been intensifying in recent years. Extreme weather and climate events have occurred frequently, widely, strongly and concurrently. Abnormal climate conditions have become more persistent and frequent, and more regions are experiencing more compound extreme events. Continuous high temperature weather has brought many adverse effects on human health and agricultural production.

The next ten days will still have continuous high temperature weather

According to the forecast of the Central Meteorological Observatory, in the next 10 days, the Sichuan Basin, Jianghan, Jianghuai, Jiangnan and other places will still have persistent high temperature weather, with the cumulative number of high temperature days reaching 7 to 10 days. The highest temperature in the above-mentioned areas can reach 35-38℃, and locally it can exceed 40℃. After comprehensive analysis, the duration of this regional high temperature heat wave event in my country will continue to extend, and the comprehensive intensity will further increase.
