1. Moldy sugarcane

Wang Weiqing, a national second-level public nutritionist, published an article in Health Times in 2015, pointing out that every spring is a high-incidence period for poisoning from eating moldy sugarcane, which can cause mild discomfort or even life-threatening conditions. Sugarcane is usually harvested in autumn, so most of the sugarcane sold in spring has been stored for a whole winter. At this time, the weather is warmer and the spring rain is humid, which is the season when mold is easy to reproduce. If it is not stored properly, it will inevitably become moldy. 2. Bitter nuts

Zhang Wei, a member of the Chinese Nutrition Society, wrote in a 2014 article in Health Times that if you eat bitter melon seeds, you must spit them out and rinse your mouth immediately, because the bitter taste of melon seeds and other nuts comes from aflatoxin produced during the mold process. This toxin is currently the most toxic of chemical toxins, and its toxicity is dozens of times that of the highly toxic poison arsenic. Frequent intake will increase the risk of liver cancer. 3. Sprouted potatoes

Wang Guizhen, president of the Weifang City Nutritionist Association of Shandong Province, published an article in Health Times in 2017 pointing out that potatoes naturally contain a toxic alkaloid substance called solanine, but under normal circumstances, the content of solanine is extremely low. If potatoes sprout, the solanine content in the sprouting area is very high. 4. Black Spotted Sweet Potato

In 2016, Cai Zhengwen, a national second-level public nutritionist, published an article in Health Times, reminding people not to buy sweet potatoes with black spots. Black spots on sweet potatoes are caused by sweet potato black spot disease. Black spot bacteria are not easily killed by high temperatures and produce sweet potato ketone and sweet potato ketone alcohol toxins. These toxins mainly damage the liver and cause symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. In severe cases, bleeding and shock may occur. [4]

5. Moldy ginger

Li Junxian, chief physician of the Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine of Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital, published an article in Chengdu Business Daily Sichuan Famous Doctors stating that ginger left for too long will easily go bad and mold, posing a risk of cancer! The "safrole" contained in ginger is a carcinogen and has been included in the "Class 2B Carcinogen List" by the World Health Organization. Generally, fresh ginger contains only a very small amount of safrole, which will not cause harm to the human body. However, once ginger becomes moldy and rotten, its safrole content will increase dramatically, and long-term consumption will increase the risk of cancer. [5]

6. Fruits with mold spots

In 2018, Shan Ying, a nutritionist at the Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, published an article in Health Times stating that for moldy fruits, no matter how large the moldy area is, it is recommended to discard all of them and not eat them anymore. The toxins produced by mold can spread from the rotten part through the fruit juice to other non-rotten parts of the fruit. [6]

Even if you cut off the bad parts of the food, you can’t eat it!

When food becomes moldy or spoiled, some people will cut off the moldy part and continue to eat it! However, this is a wrong practice.

Because we can't see mold with our naked eyes, there may be mold. The toxins produced by mold can spread to other normal parts of the food. Secondly, once mold is produced, it is difficult to remove it completely. Even after high-temperature cooking, only part of the mold can be killed, and it is still impossible to remove it completely.

Therefore, don’t feel bad if the food is moldy or spoiled, just throw it away!
