Hard drive full again?

This "super CD" can store the data of 100 commercial hard drives!

When you hear the word optical disk, do you need to react for a moment? As time goes by, optical disks are becoming increasingly irrelevant to our daily lives and work. However, for data centers with large storage volumes, optical disks are an important storage method that cannot be ignored.

The Shanghai Institute of Optics and Precision Mechanics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, in collaboration with Shanghai University of Technology and other research institutions, has created a "fully transparent" optical disc using the world's first dual-beam controlled aggregation-induced emission super-resolution optical storage technology. The equivalent capacity of a single disc is at the Pb level (1Pb=1000Tb), equivalent to 100 commercial hard drives.

We are the first in the world to develop beam-controlled aggregation-induced emission super-resolution optical storage technology, which can control the aggregation-induced emission effect and area, reduce the information recording point to the nanometer level, and achieve super-resolution readout at the same time, breaking the diffraction limit in the field of optical storage.

The optical disc achieves super-resolution data storage with a dot size of 54 nanometers and a track pitch of 70 nanometers, and completes 100 layers of multi-layer recording, with a single disc equivalent capacity of about 1.6 Pb. After accelerated aging testing, the optical disc medium life is greater than 40 years.

The researchers wrote the logos of Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics and Shanghai University of Technology on each layer of the disc, and they can be read from the 1st and 100th layers, demonstrating the extremely high three-dimensional performance of the material. The original bit error rate of the disc was 0.33%, and after error correction technology, the bit error rate of a single disc is basically close to zero.

The birth of the super optical disc is the first breakthrough in the world to achieve ultra-large capacity optical storage at the Pb level. It is of great significance for my country to break through key core technologies in the field of information storage and achieve sustainable development of the digital economy.

You have actually seen the sleepyhead used by Sun Wukong!

In Journey to the West, Sun Wukong often used the sleepy bug to make monsters or others sleepy and easy for him to act secretly. With Sun Wukong's clever use, the sleepy bug helped a lot in the journey to the West. So, who exactly is this magical bug?

According to the description in Journey to the West, we can see that the sleepy bug has two characteristics: First, the sleepy bug probably does not have wings that can fly. Because when Sun Wukong ejects and throws it, if the sleepy bug can fly, it may not be able to hit the target accurately. Second, the sleepy bug can crawl into the nostrils of people by itself, and it is likely to be a burrowing creature.

Soon after the novel Journey to the West was published, an enthusiastic reader named Huang Bingshi discussed its origin in his essay collection Occasionally Obtained Blue Pearls. "There are also sleep bugs. The sandworms on the sea live in the cracks of rocks. They like to sleep and are called sleep bugs. They can be used as poison to shoot at people and animals."

The ancient classics "Compendium of Materia Medica" and "Tan Zi Diao Chong" both record the habits of sand slugs. Sand slugs are actually the larvae of antflies, also known as antlions. Antlions are short, generally less than 1 cm, spindle-shaped, with a plump abdomen and a huge sickle-shaped mandible on their heads. They are good at digging traps to catch prey, crawling backwards to dig pits, forming steep funnels. When waiting for an opportunity to move, antlions look like they are sleeping quietly. When a small insect slips into the funnel, the antlion quickly attacks, injects toxins to absorb body fluids, and then throws out the debris.

"Journey to the West" emphasized the superficial characteristic of the antlion as a skilled hunter in nature, namely "sleepiness", and then used rich imagination to integrate it into the plot of the journey to the West almost seamlessly. From then on, the sleepyhead became famous and gradually overshadowed the sand scraper as the prototype.

The brightest object in the universe,

Almost considered as wrong data

Quasars are absolutely huge in the universe. Each quasar contains a very active supermassive black hole. Quasars can attract surrounding galactic matter at an extremely fast speed to form a dense accretion disk. The friction of the matter in the accretion disk can produce extremely high temperatures, thus radiating light energy outward with unimaginable brightness.

In the world of quasars, masses hundreds of millions of times those of the sun are commonplace, and an attraction range of hundreds of millions of light years is a piece of cake.

The J0529-4351 quasar recently discovered by Christian Wolf's team at the Australian National University is considered to be the best in the quasar family: among the quasars discovered so far, it is the brightest, with an emission power of about 2x1041 watts, which is one quadrillion times the power of the sun!

According to Einstein's mass-energy equation, this quasar emits energy equivalent to the mass of the Earth every three seconds, and this star has existed in the universe for 12 billion years. According to common sense, it should have exhausted its energy long ago.

Scientists then conducted further research and found that the quasar was attracting galactic matter around it at a faster rate. Calculations showed that it could "eat" galactic matter nearly twice the mass of the sun every day!

This interstellar behemoth is devouring vast amounts of matter, emitting light with enormous power, and running wildly at the edge of the universe, yet we know very little about it.

Why has no one noticed this bright quasar? The answer is: it is so bright that it looks fake.

So far, millions of quasars have been discovered, and manual review of such a large number of quasars is too slow. Therefore, people handed over the work of quasar inspection and discovery to computers, and used the known quasar data at the time as material for machine learning.

As you can imagine, the computer had never seen such a bright quasar, so when it saw J0529-4351, it regarded it as erroneous data and automatically skipped it. Fortunately, the researchers saved it from the discarded data in time.

Get a close look at the magical toadstools!

The spores of the toadstool are hidden in the gaps between the gills. Rows of spore stalks continuously produce spores. In 24 hours, a toadstool can produce millions of spores that are almost invisible to the naked eye. They slowly float into the air with the air pressure generated by the umbrella-like structure of the cap, drifting far away, and also bringing the hope of population reproduction to the countryside.
