Guangxi welcomes the heaviest rainfall of "Dragon Boat Water"! Beware of secondary disasters after the rain

According to the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Meteorological Bureau, from June 13 to 19, Guangxi experienced continuous heavy rain to extremely heavy rain, which was the heaviest rainfall period of Guangxi's "Dragon Boat Water" this year.

Rainfall in many places broke local historical records

This torrential rain process is characterized by a wide range of rainstorms, long duration, large accumulated rainfall, and strong extremes.

According to statistics, from 20:00 on June 12 to 15:00 on June 19, the average surface rainfall in Guangxi reached 152 mm. Among them, the area with cumulative rainfall exceeding 100 mm was 174,200 square kilometers, accounting for 73.3% of the total area of the region. The heavy rainfall centers mainly appeared in Guilin, Hezhou and Liuzhou , with average surface rainfall reaching 323.7 mm, 249.8 mm and 210.4 mm respectively. Xing'an County, Yongfu County and Lingchuan County of Guilin City repeatedly experienced heavy rainstorms, and the cumulative rainfall in 7 towns exceeded 700 mm, with the largest being 945.5 mm in Rongjiang Town of Xing'an County.

During this heavy rainfall, the extreme rainfall in Guilin was prominent . In the 24-hour rainfall monitoring statistics, 38 meteorological observation stations in Guilin broke the historical records since their establishment, among which Xing'an Town, Xing'an County, Jiuwu Town, Lingchuan County, and Xianshui Town, Quanzhou County reached 442.5 mm, 435.2 mm, and 319.1 mm respectively, all breaking the historical records of the county.

On the 19th, the State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters upgraded the fourth-level emergency response for flood control in Guangxi to level three.

Why is there so much rainfall in Guangxi this year?

According to the Guangxi Meteorological Bureau, there have been 12 regional rainstorms in Guangxi since April this year.

Nong Mengsong, chief forecaster of the Guangxi Meteorological Bureau, said that since the flood season began this year, the southwest monsoon has strengthened earlier, and coupled with frequent cold air activities in the north, resulting in more regional rainstorms in Guangxi in April compared with the same period in previous years.

The extremely heavy rainfall in northeast Guangxi this time is due to the fact that since mid-June, the subtropical high pressure has been stable along the coast of South China, and the low vortex shear line has been stranded in northern Guangxi for a long time. Together with the southwest monsoon, the cold and warm air currents have been converging over Guangxi for a long time. During this process, the rainfall in northeast Guangxi has significant convective characteristics, the convective system moves slowly and a "train effect" occurs, which leads to the result.

What will be the future weather trends?

The rain in Guangxi will weaken in the next few days, but there will still be a lot of rain in northern Guangxi. The Meteorological Observatory predicts that from June 20 to 22, there will be moderate rain in northern Guangxi and local heavy rain, and there will be showers in southern Guangxi in the afternoon. The public is advised to pay close attention to weather changes.

When encountering heavy rain, please remember these safety tips

1. Try to reduce going out, take the initiative to avoid danger, and properly place items that are easy to fall from the balcony.

2. When walking in rainy days, avoid manhole covers, billboards, temporary structures, dilapidated walls, roadside trees, etc. When walking in stagnant water, pay attention to avoid falling into wells, pits, or holes.

3. When heavy rain is accompanied by thunder and lightning, it is best not to answer or make phone calls to avoid attracting lightning.

4. When driving in rainy days, pay attention to warning signs such as sunken overpasses, sunken roads, and culverts, and avoid flooded sections in advance. If your vehicle is in distress when the water level reaches the wheels, do not try to force your way through the flooded area, as water may have already entered the vehicle. If your vehicle stalls in water, quickly determine the situation and do not restart the engine a second time. In an emergency, abandon the vehicle and escape decisively.

Don’t relax after the rain stops, as geological disasters have a certain lag!

Although this round of heavy rainfall is coming to an end, it does not mean that the risk has been eliminated. The heavy rainfall lasted for a long time, the heavy rain areas overlapped, and the meteorological risk of heavy rain disasters was high. We still need to guard against geological disasters such as landslides and collapses caused by heavy rainfall.

After the rain stops, the groundwater formed by the saturated soil on the upper part of the hillside seeps down the hillside and gathers. The rock and soil on the lower part of the hillside is in a supersaturated state, and it is very easy to become unstable and cause landslides and collapses under the action of gravity. Therefore, please try to avoid mountains, hills, and rivers when traveling.

In addition, foodborne diseases are more common after heavy rains, so we must strengthen our awareness of prevention and pay attention to food hygiene:

1. Clean and disinfect the home environment and cooking utensils in a timely manner;

2. Keep food clean and separate raw and cooked food;

3. Do not eat food soaked in rainwater;

4. Pay attention to drinking water hygiene and do not drink raw water;

5. Do not eat unwashed fruits and vegetables, and do not use rainwater to wash fruits and vegetables;

6. Do not eat poultry or livestock that died of poisoning, disease, drowning, or unknown causes, and do not eat fish or shrimp that died of unknown causes;

7. Do not eat cold dishes when sanitary conditions are poor;

8. Do not eat rotten food or expired food;

9. Do not eat sprouted potatoes, rotten fruits and vegetables, moldy rice or noodles.
