A young man showed off 7 crabs for a meal

I "showed off" myself to the ICU...

According to the young man, he ate 7 crabs in one go during the rare reunion with his family. That night, he developed abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting and other symptoms. After taking painkillers at home, the symptoms not only did not ease, but worsened. His family immediately sent him to the hospital for emergency treatment.

Emergency medical staff performed emergency treatment on the young man. Test results showed that his blood amylase and blood lipase were elevated. The young man was diagnosed with "severe acute pancreatitis". His condition was very serious and he was immediately transferred to the ICU for emergency treatment.

The doctor inquired about the patient's medical history and learned that the young man was overweight, with a body mass index (BMI) of 25.3kg/m². He was a programmer, worked 996 hours a day, often worked overtime, had little time for exercise, and loved to drink beverages, coffee, and eat fast food. Due to long-term poor diet and lifestyle , he had already developed problems such as high blood lipids and high blood sugar.

Fortunately, after the medical staff's full rescue and three days of continuous blood purification treatment, the young man finally turned from danger to safety.

Then why did eating just a few crabs cause the condition to get him sent to the ICU?

The American Heart Association recommends that the cholesterol intake per person per day should not exceed 300 mg . According to statistics, 100 grams of crab paste contains 466 mg of cholesterol, and 100 grams of crab meat contains 65 mg of cholesterol. For healthy people, eating a hairy crab each time is almost enough to take in a day's worth of total cholesterol. The pancreatic juice secreted by the human body contains enzymes for digesting protein and fat. After overeating, a large amount of pancreatic juice is secreted. If the pancreatic duct is not drained smoothly, causing the digestive enzyme excretion to be blocked, it will eventually lead to severe acute pancreatitis.

From the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine, seafood is considered to be very cold , which can damage the spleen and stomach, causing gastrointestinal diseases such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Crabs are cold in nature, salty in taste, and belong to the liver and stomach meridians. They have the effects of relaxing muscles and replenishing qi, regulating the stomach and digestion, unblocking meridians, dispersing heat, and dispersing blood stasis. However, because crabs are cold in nature , if they are eaten in large quantities at one time, they will block the circulation of qi and blood in the spleen and stomach, which is not conducive to digestion and can easily lead to severe acute pancreatitis.

Acute pancreatitis is a disease that can be fatal if taken lightly. Acute pancreatitis is an inflammatory reaction caused by the activation of pancreatic enzymes in the pancreas due to various causes, which leads to self-digestion, edema, bleeding and even necrosis of the pancreatic tissue. It is more common in young and middle-aged people , and 20%-30% of the cases are more serious. The overall mortality rate is 5%-10%, and the mortality rate of severe patients can reach 30%. The disease generally manifests as sudden upper and middle abdominal pain and bloating, which can radiate to the shoulders and back, and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, fever, jaundice and other symptoms; severe cases may also cause hemorrhage and necrosis, followed by peritonitis and shock.

(1) People with allergic constitution

Crab is one of the main foods that cause foodborne allergic reactions. People with allergies may experience symptoms such as rash, itching, cough, and asthma after eating it.

(2) Pregnant women

Crabs are cold in nature and have the effect of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis. Pregnant women who eat crabs are prone to bleeding or miscarriage. In addition, there may be parasites or hormone components in crabs, which will endanger the health of themselves and the fetus after pregnant women eat them.

(3) People with spleen and stomach deficiency and coldness

Crabs are very cold foods in nature. People with weak spleen and stomach are prone to symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, or indigestion after eating crabs.

(4) People with digestive system diseases

People with symptoms or diseases such as diarrhea, stomach pain, chronic gastritis, duodenal ulcer, cholecystitis, cholelithiasis, etc. should not eat crabs. Crabs are rich in protein, and eating a lot of them will promote the secretion of pancreatic juice and induce pancreatitis . At the same time, crab roe is also rich in cholesterol, which promotes bile secretion and increases the liver burden of hepatitis patients.

(5) People with cardiovascular disease

Crabs, especially crab roe, are high in cholesterol , and eating too much can lead to elevated cholesterol in the blood. Therefore, patients with dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, and cerebrovascular disease should not eat too many crabs.

(6) People with liver and kidney diseases

Especially for patients in the active stage of hepatitis and liver and kidney dysfunction, due to gastric mucosal edema, abnormal bile secretion, and decreased digestive function, crab meat is rich in protein and difficult to digest and absorb, which often causes indigestion, abdominal distension, vomiting, etc.

(7) People with gout

Crabs are high in purine . Eating too much may increase blood uric acid levels and aggravate gout.

(8) People with fever, cold, or diarrhea

Crabs are cold foods and can easily irritate the stomach. They may cause digestive tract symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. They are not conducive to the recovery of patients with colds and fevers.

(9) Infants and young children

Infants and young children should not eat too many crabs because their digestive organs are not fully developed and their digestion and absorption abilities are poor.

(10) Elderly people

The digestive system of the elderly is aging, its functions are declining, and their digestion and absorption abilities are poor, so when eating crabs, they should focus on tasting and not eat too much.

(1) Eat crabs fresh

Live crabs can excrete some pathogens in their bodies through their own metabolism, but dead crabs cannot perform this function. Even if the pathogens in the dead crabs are killed by steaming, the toxins produced by these viruses cannot be eliminated and may cause food poisoning.

The shell of a fresh live crab is glossy blue-black, with a full navel and a white abdomen , while the shell of a dying crab is yellow and its legs are soft.

(2) Crabs should be steamed and cooked thoroughly

Crabs feed on dead animals or humus, so their body surface, gills and gastrointestinal tract are full of various bacteria and mud. How can you not get sick if you eat them? If you steam or cook them thoroughly before eating, you won't have this problem.

(3) Crabs should be steamed and eaten immediately

If you cannot finish it in one go, the remaining food must be kept in a clean, cool and ventilated place, and must be put back into the pot and cooked and steamed thoroughly before eating.

(4) Four parts of crabs that cannot be eaten

Crab gills : After opening the crab shell, the two rows of gray feather-like tissue on the crab are the crab gills, which are the crab's respiratory system. Crabs use their gills to filter lake water, so there will be some mud and sand in the gills, which cannot be eaten.

Crab heart : Crab heart is a white hexagon located in the center of the crab body, hidden under the crab roe or black membrane. Chinese medicine believes that crab heart is very cold and should not be eaten.

Crab stomach : Open the crab shell, the crab stomach is in the center of the crab shell, hidden in the crab roe. There is a lot of mud and sand in the crab stomach, so it is not recommended to eat.

Crab intestines : Crab intestines are in the lower abdomen of the crab, that is, in the abdominal shell that can be opened. Open the abdominal shell with the pointed navel or the round navel, and you can see a black line connecting to the crab body, which is the crab intestines. The crab intestines are full of mud and sand, and cannot be eaten.

Experts advise

Crabs are cold and difficult to digest, so eat less

Do not eat crabs more than three times a week

Don't eat more than 400 grams each time.

Although crabs are good, you can't be greedy~
