Be careful! If hot pot chili oil gets into your eyes, ophthalmologists will share their emergency response tips!

In Chongqing, winter is the peak season for eating hotpot. Hot, spicy and delicious hotpot drives away the cold of winter and brings endless warmth and satisfaction. However, when enjoying the meal, accidents sometimes happen, such as hotpot chili oil splashing into the eyes. What can we do?

Warm reminder: "Eye burns from hot oil are one of the most common non-mechanical eye injuries in daily life. Hot water, hot liquid, boiling oil and other high-temperature liquids splashing into the eyes can cause burns and edema of eye tissue. When hot pot spicy oil splashes into your eyes, don't panic. It is crucial to deal with it correctly at the first time."

Stay calm and avoid rubbing your eyes

When the chili oil splashes into your eyes, you may feel a strong stinging sensation, but you must resist the urge to rub your eyes. Rubbing your eyes will only make the situation worse, and may cause the chili oil to spread further, causing greater damage to the eyes, and even damaging key parts such as the cornea.

Rinse immediately with plenty of water

Secondly, quickly find a clean source of running water, such as a faucet. Put your eyes close to the water and let the clean water slowly rinse your eyes. During the rinsing process, you can gently move your eyeballs to ensure that every corner is rinsed. The rinsing time should last at least 15 to 20 minutes. The water temperature may be low in Chongqing in winter, but do not shorten the rinsing time because of fear of the cold. If there is no faucet nearby, you can use bottled purified water for emergency. Be careful when opening the bottle cap to prevent the water from being contaminated again.

Apply cold compress to relieve discomfort

After rinsing with clean water, if your eyes are still painful and swollen, you can apply cold compresses. Wrap ice cubes or ice packs in a clean towel and gently apply them to your eyes. The cold compress time should be controlled at about 10 to 15 minutes, and you can apply the cold compress again after a period of time. Although it is cold in winter, cold compresses can help reduce the irritation of chili oil to the eyes.

If the pain, redness, swelling and other symptoms of the eyes are not significantly relieved after the above treatment, or if there are abnormal conditions such as blurred vision, photophobia, and tearing, you must go to the hospital immediately. On the way to the hospital, you can gently cover your eyes with clean gauze or paper towels to prevent further contamination from external dust, but do not press hard. Choose the nearest medical institution to get professional treatment as soon as possible.

Warm reminder: "After being splashed by oil, your vision will be temporarily blurred. Do not eat spicy or irritating food during the recovery period to avoid worsening inflammation. We also remind our friends that while enjoying the delicious hot pot, you must pay attention to safety. Once the hot pot spicy oil splashes into your eyes, be sure to handle it correctly as soon as possible to protect our precious eyes."
