Ping-pong balls can't pass train security checks? Other prohibited sports equipment include these

A table tennis enthusiast

Carrying table tennis balls on the high-speed train

But the staff told me that I couldn't take it on board.

This makes one wonder:

Why are ping-pong balls prohibited?

What other common sporting goods are subject to similar restrictions?

Today, let’s take a closer look at

These security regulations are easily overlooked

As a common sporting equipment, whether table tennis balls can be taken on trains depends on the material they are made of. There are two main materials for table tennis balls: celluloid and acetate .

Table tennis balls made of celluloid have a very low ignition point and are flammable solids. According to the "Catalogue of Prohibited, Restricted and Checked Items for Railway Passengers", table tennis balls made of this material are prohibited from being carried into the station or on the train. Table tennis balls made of cellulose acetate are a new green and environmentally friendly material with a melting point of over 200 degrees Celsius , which can be transported by rail. During the security inspection process, the images of the two types of table tennis balls in the security scanner are different in color : the celluloid image is green, while the acetate image is orange.

In addition, ordinary passengers can also judge by the logo on the ping-pong balls. Ping-pong balls marked with " 40+ " are usually made of new materials and can be carried, while ping-pong balls without logo or only marked with "40" cannot be carried.

In addition to table tennis, the following types of sports equipment are restricted when traveling by train.

(1)

Folding bike

If the item is within the specified size range (not more than 160 cm for conventional trains and not more than 130 cm for EMU trains) and is completely packed in hard packaging, it can be carried on board; otherwise it needs to be checked in.

(2)

Blunt instruments such as pool cues and hockey sticks

Blunt objects such as billiard cues and hockey sticks are not allowed to be carried on trains or high-speed trains, but they can be checked in.

(3)

Martial arts swords and knives

It is prohibited to carry sharpened martial arts knives and swords; unsharpened ones must be approved by the railway police before they can be carried.

(4)

Bows and crossbows for shooting competitions

It is prohibited to carry it with you. If you have an event, you need to show relevant proof and contact the station in advance.

(5)

Snowboards and other snow equipment

Snow equipment should be properly packed and can be carried with you as long as it does not exceed the weight and volume of free carry-on items. If it exceeds the free carry-on weight and volume standards, you will need to choose the snow equipment express delivery service.

(6)

Trekking poles, ice axe, oxygen bottle

There are length restrictions for pole-shaped items such as trekking poles when carrying them: on ordinary trains, the length must not exceed 200 cm; on EMU trains, the length must not exceed 130 cm; items exceeding the specified size must be checked in. Ice axes are not allowed to be carried on board, but can be checked in. Oxygen cylinders other than bagged medical oxygen are not allowed to be carried.
