Pure 3D TV faces imminent death, study says

Recently, some media reported that the 3D TV, which was once very popular two years ago, has now seen a serious decline in its market share in my country and is facing the fate of being aborted. According to the monitoring data released recently by GFK, one of the four largest market research institutions in the world, in 2013, the sales share of color TVs with 3D technology alone in the Chinese market was only 2.1%, while the sales of smart TVs without 3D function reached 20%, and the sales of smart TVs with 3D function reached as high as 64%.

It is reported that because it is not convenient to wear special glasses, even families with 3D TVs rarely watch 3D programs. Not only is the sales of 3D TV very low in my country, but it is also facing the fate of being aborted in countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States. When the British BBC broadcast a Christmas special last year, only 5% of the audience who had 3D TVs watched it in 3D.

Pure 3D TVs are not available in stores

Recently, the reporter visited and investigated the situation of 3D TV in the stores. In a large electrical appliance store in Xinjiekou, the TV area occupied a large area, but the reporter found that no matter what brand it was, almost no one mentioned 3D in the main product or slogan, and basically only mentioned ultra-high definition and smart cloud media.

However, the reporter found that more than half of the TVs have 3D function, but these TVs with this function are also smart TVs, and there are no TVs without 3D function.

The reporter asked a salesperson in a certain brand area whether there were any non-smart TVs with 3D. The salesperson said no, "It seems that few people pay attention to this now."

Regarding the 3D effect, a shopping guide said that smart TVs have some special 3D movie source libraries, which can be downloaded for a fee, or Blu-ray 3D discs can be purchased by oneself, but the choice is not large.

In a brand TV area, the shopping guide also introduced naked-eye 3D. He turned on the video and let the reporter watch the 3D effect. There was a three-dimensional sense without wearing glasses. However, it was just this one video. The shopping guide also said that if you change to another TV, you will definitely not have this effect. The main credit lies in this video.

Citizens are not interested in 3D function

In the store, many citizens who were choosing TVs said that they were mainly concerned about the multi-functions and display clarity of smart TVs.

"The 3D function is not real, and there are no 3D TV programs. Even if there are 3D movies, I still have to wear glasses to watch them, which is so awkward. Even if there are 3D movies, I would prefer to choose a cinema to watch them." said a citizen who was choosing.

Ms. Lu, who bought a pure 3D TV of a foreign brand when she got married two years ago, told reporters that before the purchase, she and her husband wore glasses to watch a 3D movie about the underwater world. The movie had a full sense of three-dimensionality and they were quite interested at the time, so they spent more than 10,000 yuan to buy a 3D TV. However, they found that it was completely useless later on.

"To be honest, only that few minutes of the movie is 3D. I can't watch it every day. Apart from that, there is no 3D effect. It's exactly the same as ordinary TV. I really regret spending that money." Ms. Lu said.

3D TV technology needs major innovation

President Xu from the Jiangsu Home Appliance Repair Association said that due to considerations of technological innovation and profits, 3D effects in televisions will continue to exist and develop, but major innovations are needed to promote development.

Chairman Xu said that the rules of the home appliance industry are actually very simple. The promotion of any major manufacturer is to promote the innovation of the main functions. This was the case with 3D in the beginning. Now with the concept of smart TV, all businesses are focusing on the smart card.

"At present, domestic 3D TV technology itself is not mature enough. The most criticized issue by consumers is the 3D glasses. The discomfort of wearing glasses makes many consumers have concerns about 3D TV. In addition, the quantity and quality of content production cannot keep up with the pace of hardware equipment updates. 3D movie sources take up a lot of storage space, so a genuine 3D Blu-ray movie disc is also very expensive, which restricts its development." said an industry insider who declined to be named.
