Will OLED technology become the future trend of television?

Why OLED technology is suitable for TVs

Since LCD technology replaced the traditional CRT tube, LCD TV has occupied the entire market. Despite this, LCD TV itself is still very controversial. Although compared with CRT TV, LCD TV has obvious advantages in terms of body size, actual power consumption, screen size, and environmental protection and energy saving, its color performance, response time, viewing angle and black purity have not been ideal. Therefore, in all these years, LCD TV has been living in the praise and doubt of consumers. LCD TV is not the most perfect solution in the eyes of consumers. At the same time, it is now facing a strong competitor - OLED display technology.

The reason why OLED is widely favored by industry insiders and the industry believes that it is the successor to LCD technology is mainly because it has completely solved some "historical problems" of LCD display technology in many aspects: OLED display technology does not require a separate backlight source and can emit light on its own, so its body thickness can be further reduced, and its color saturation and overall performance are also better than LCD technology, and there is no problem of slow response speed.

In addition, LCD TVs have poor black purity when displaying all-black images, so they have light leakage, and their native contrast is usually only around 1000:1, and the layering of the picture is poor. OLED display technology can display better black picture purity, that is, the brightness of the black picture is lower, so it can have a higher native contrast, and its value can easily exceed 1 million:1. Compared with traditional LCD TVs, it can display a purer black effect and a better layering.

For most consumers, their ideal TV is to have a slim design, excellent display effect and ultra-low power consumption, and OLED display technology has comprehensive improvements over LCD technology in these three aspects. Therefore, OLED is more suitable for use in flat-panel TVs than LCD technology.

Thin, light and flexible, creating more possibilities

From the above, we can see that OLED technology has made comprehensive improvements on the shortcomings and defects of liquid crystal display technology in terms of display effects. It can ensure ultra-thinness and low power consumption while also ensuring excellent display effects, making it more suitable for use in flat-screen TVs. Of course, the advantages of OLED technology are not only reflected in picture quality, it can also provide favorable conditions for the appearance design innovation of flat-screen TVs.

Since there is no need for a backlight source, the thickness of an OLED panel is lower than that of an LCD panel, so the thickness of an OLED TV can be further reduced. In addition, thinner panels also give TV manufacturers more room for innovation. They can design a more fashionable, personalized, and artistic appearance for OLED TVs. The "Gallery" TV launched by LG is a good example. It is precisely because of the ultra-thin characteristics of the OLED panel that it can be embedded in a picture frame, while it would be much more difficult to achieve such a design if an LCD panel was used. I believe that in the future, TV manufacturers will further explore this advantage of OLED and make TVs more artistic.

In addition, OLED panels are also very flexible and can work normally even when bent. Now curved TVs are beginning to emerge in the market, which can provide better visual wrapping than flat-screen TVs and improve the picture quality experience at the edge of the screen. If traditional LCD technology is used, it is very difficult to achieve a curved surface, but if OLED technology is used, it is easier to achieve a curved surface and the actual effect will be better. In summary, the ideal flat-panel TV for consumers should have better color performance, no tailing, a larger viewing angle, a thinner and more stylish appearance design. These OLED display technologies can meet these needs very well. Therefore, OLED represents the future development trend of the display industry and is more suitable for use in flat-panel TV products.
