2K screen + 810 chip + large memory: this year's mobile phone trend from CES

2K screen + 810 chip + large memory: this year's mobile phone trend from CES

CES has never been a showcase for new smartphones, but it always brings some interesting announcements that foreshadow major trends in smartphone product development over the next 12 months, and this year was no exception.

Smartphone makers have struggled to convince people to upgrade to new devices because their new phones lack breakthrough features, but the new models still offer major improvements, including more powerful processors, better displays and enhanced cameras.

The launch of the G Flex2 curved phone shows that LG has not given up on the idea of curved smartphones. Interestingly, LG has reduced the display size from 6 inches to 5.5 inches, while increasing the resolution to 1080p.

I'm still not a fan of the G Flex2, even though the curved screen makes the phone more ergonomic and comfortable to use. However, the Samsung Galaxy Note Edge with its curved side screen is more useful: it allows users to access and view more information.

In fact, LG's display team also showed off a side-rounded display, so it seems likely that this concept will gain traction. The key will be developing apps that can take advantage of this display so that it can display content that is both useful to the user and not distracting.

Although it's not a trend at CES yet, more and more high-end smartphones are coming with displays that have a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels, also known as QHD. The Google Nexus 6 and LG G3 both have QHD displays.

High-resolution displays are also spreading to lower-priced smartphones. The base model of the ZenFone 2 with LTE costs $199, but it has a 5.5-inch 1080p display. It also has a 13-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front camera. Overall, this year, buyers of smartphones priced under $200 will be able to get a higher-end model, such as a better display, camera, and LTE support.

The "innards" of the Flex2 and ZenFone 2 are also a harbinger of new models to be released this year. The Flex2 is equipped with a 64-bit 8-core Snapdragon 810 chip, Qualcomm 's new generation flagship chip.

The Snapdragon 810, which will be found in many other high-end smartphones, offers performance improvements across the board, including faster memory and LTE, and support for 4K video from its integrated Adreno 430 graphics processing unit.

The ZenFone 2 is also expected to come with up to 4GB of RAM, which will help improve the phone's multitasking performance. Smartphone makers have been slow to increase RAM capacity, and the ZenFone 2 could mean that's about to change.

Asus is still a challenger in the smartphone market, so it needs features to help it attract consumers. While Asus attracts consumers through hardware, Alcatel OneTouch attracts consumers through software. Alcatel OneTouch's new PIXI 3 series smartphones can run Android, Firefox OS or Windows Phone. Users choose the operating system when purchasing the PIXI 3, which is the same as the HTC One M8. The HTC One M8 comes pre-installed with Android or Windows Phone.

How does this affect smartphone buyers? If you bought a new high-end smartphone last year, you may not upgrade to a new one this year; but for users who have older smartphones or want to buy a cheap smartphone, the smartphones released this year will be attractive.
