WHO: Half of the world's 360 million people with hearing impairment could have been avoided

The World Health Organization released a report saying that about 1.1 billion young people around the world are threatened by excessive noise from personal audio-visual devices and entertainment venues. The resulting hearing loss may have adverse effects on their physical and mental health, education and employment.

The study found that nearly 50 percent of people aged 12 to 35 use personal audio-visual devices at volumes exceeding legal limits, and 40 percent spend too much time in entertainment venues with excessive noise levels.

It is reported that staying in a noise level of 100 decibels for 15 minutes may cause temporary or permanent hearing damage, and the noise level at concerts, bars, nightclubs and sports events will reach or exceed 100 decibels. Etienne, an official in charge of non-communicable diseases control at the World Health Organization, said: "People will unknowingly put their hearing at risk in their daily lives, but as long as they develop good habits to protect their hearing, such as turning down the volume, wearing earplugs or choosing suitable headphones, they can avoid hearing damage while enjoying entertainment." The World Health Organization estimates that there are currently about 360 million people in the world with moderate or severe hearing impairment for various reasons, half of whom could have been avoided. March 3 is International Ear Care Day. To commemorate this year's International Ear Care Day, the World Health Organization will launch a global "Make Hearing Safe" initiative in order to arouse the attention of young people, their parents, governments and relevant agencies to the problem of damage to hearing caused by entertainment noise.
