Shenzhen, April 8 (Xinhua) -- Luo Wen, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, revealed at a national electronic information industry work symposium held in Shenzhen on the 8th that in 2017, the overall scale of my country's electronic information industry above designated size reached 18.5 trillion yuan, and the output of mobile phones, computers and color TVs ranked first in the world. A number of leading companies with global competitiveness have emerged in the fields of communication equipment and the Internet.

According to reports, the overall operation of my country's electronic information industry showed a steady and progressive trend in 2017, with revenue reaching nearly 20 trillion yuan. While the scale of the industry is rapidly expanding, the innovation capacity continues to improve, and the structural optimization has achieved remarkable results.

In terms of high-end chips, the "Sunway TaihuLight" supercomputer, which uses domestic supercomputer CPU, has been ranked first in the world's top 500 supercomputers for two consecutive years; important breakthroughs have been made in the research and development of 3D NAND flash memory chips; Huawei, Cambrian, Horizon Robotics and other companies have released artificial intelligence chips.

In terms of new display technologies, my country's first 6th generation flexible AMOLED production line has entered mass production at BOE in Chengdu; many domestic companies have successively launched full-screen displays of various specifications, breaking the market monopoly of foreign companies.

The annual output of smartphones reached 1.4 billion units, with Huawei, OPPO, Xiaomi, and vivo ranking among the top six smartphone manufacturers in the world in terms of shipments. In terms of new generation mobile communications, 5G development continued to accelerate, with technology research and development completing the second phase of trials, the mid-band spectrum use plan being the first to be released, and domestic communications equipment companies have launched end-to-end 5G pre-commercial systems.

Luo Wen said that at present, there is still a gap between my country's electronic information industry and developed countries such as the United States, Japan and South Korea. The core problem is the weak innovation capability, which is mainly reflected in three "incompatibilities".

First, there is a mismatch between the oversupply of low-end products and the undersupply of high-end products. For example, Apple firmly holds the leading position in high-end mobile phone consumption, and in the field of high-end digital imaging, Japanese and German brands still have an absolute advantage.

Second, there is a mismatch between the weak R&D strength of enterprises and their strong marketability. According to statistics, in 2017, the R&D investment of my country's top 100 electronic information companies was about 189 billion yuan, which is less than the total R&D investment of Microsoft (about 96.7 billion yuan) and Intel (about 94.3 billion yuan).

Third, there is a mismatch between the lack of core links in the industrial chain and the complete range of industries. Some key links in the development of the industry are still controlled by others, and "Made in China" faces a situation of "lack of core and soul". For example, integrated circuits rely heavily on imports, with imports exceeding US$200 billion for several consecutive years, and domestic chips account for less than 10% of the global market share.
