The AI Index, initiated by Stanford University, is a non-profit project that tracks AI trends and progress. It aims to comprehensively study the status of the AI industry and promote extensive communication and effective dialogue on data-based AI. Yesterday, the AI Index issued its 2018 annual report. This article only gives a brief introduction to it. This report attempts to comprehensively introduce the current status of global artificial intelligence development from the perspectives of academia, industry, and policy. This year's report focuses more on global data. The report points out that the United States' AI research strength is still the strongest in the world, but China is catching up quickly. The report specifically introduces the number of students studying AI courses at Tsinghua University: the number of students enrolled in artificial intelligence + machine learning courses in 2017 was 16 times that of 2010. We’re excited to launch the AI Index 2018. This year’s report accomplishes two goals: to update the previous year’s metrics and to provide as much global context as possible. The former is critical to the AI Index’s mission—to set the foundation for conversations about AI, which means continually tracking progress in scale and technology. But the latter is important, too. It’s impossible to tell the AI story well without a global perspective. The 2017 report was heavily skewed toward North American activity. That was simply because our global partnerships were limited, not because we had an inherent bias. This year, we’ve begun to fill that global gap. We recognize that there’s still a long way to go—one that will involve more collaboration and external engagement—to make this report truly complete and comprehensive. Still, we can assert that AI is global. In 2017, 83% of AI papers on Scopus came from outside the United States. The largest share (28%) came from Europe. Enrollment in university courses in AI and machine learning (ML) is growing worldwide, with a particular highlight at Tsinghua University in China, which had 16 times more students enrolled in its combined AI + ML course in 2017 than in 2010. China also produced the largest share of industrial robots in the world in 2017—30% of all robots shipped worldwide. And it’s not just the United States, China, and Europe that are advancing AI. According to our methodology for counting AI patents, South Korea and Japan ranked second and third in the world for AI patents in 2014, behind only the United States. In addition, South Africa successfully hosted the second Deep Learning Indaba conference, one of the world’s largest machine learning teaching events, which attracted more than 500 attendees from more than 20 African countries. Diversity in AI isn’t just about geography. Today, about 50% of the Partnership on AI’s member organizations are nonprofits, including the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, Oxford University’s Future of Humanity Institute, and the United Nations Development Programme. And there’s a greater awareness of the importance of gender and minority diversity in AI. Organizations like AI4ALL and Women in Machine Learning (WiML) are stepping up efforts to encourage and support participation from underrepresented groups.
