2020 Tesla Impact Report

2020 Tesla Impact Report

Tesla's 2020 Annual Impact Report shows that by 2030, the annual sales of pure electric vehicles will reach 20 million, and the annual deployment of energy storage facilities will reach 1,500GWh.

In 2020, Tesla saved a total of 5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in the use of cars and solar panels around the world. Among them, the average carbon dioxide equivalent of Tesla cars in the United States (including manufacturing and use) is less than half of the average of fuel vehicles if calculated based on pure grid charging; if charged by solar energy, the carbon dioxide equivalent is directly reduced to about 1/10 of that of fuel vehicles.

In its report, Tesla used two numbers to give a more intuitive comparison: the first is "69 tons", which is based on the fuel vehicles sold in the United States in 2020. The average amount of carbon dioxide emitted by a fuel vehicle throughout its life cycle; the other is "5340 miles" (about 8594 kilometers). Because pure electric vehicles including Model 3 have slightly higher environmental emissions than fuel vehicles of the same level during the production process, according to comprehensive data measurements, as long as the Model 3 is used for more than 5340 miles (about 8594 kilometers), the total emissions of the entire vehicle life cycle will be lower than that of fuel vehicles.

As of 2020, Tesla's solar panels have produced more than 20,800GWh of clean electricity, which is several times the total electricity consumed by the entire company since the release of the Model S in 2012. In addition, Tesla's energy storage product sales in 2020 reached 3GWh, and its market share reached about 25%, which also shows Tesla's emphasis on and determination for clean energy.

Tesla believes that although the power grid chosen by car owners will have an impact on the carbon emissions of the car, improving the energy efficiency of the vehicle itself is the "core" to shield against external influences. As a result, Model Y and Model 3 AWD have respectively won the US four-wheel drive pure electric SUV/sedan energy efficiency championship, and the Model 3 standard range upgrade version is the most energy-efficient model on the market.
