Volkswagen's all-electric vehicle deliveries increased 96% in 2021

Volkswagen said it increased deliveries of its all-electric vehicles by 96% in 2021 compared to 2020. VW's sales surge helped the company claim the title of Europe's best-selling electric vehicle brand in 2021. In 2021, Volkswagen reported deliveries of 452,900 electric vehicles, a significant increase from 2020 figures, which were around 232,000 the year before. The Volkswagen ID.4 and ID.3 were the Volkswagen Group's two best-selling electric vehicles, with 119,600 and 75,500 delivered, respectively.

In addition, Audi e-tron sold 49,200 units, becoming Volkswagen's third best-selling model.

“2021 was very challenging due to the global shortage of semiconductors, but we consistently implemented a clear future course towards new vehicles,” said Christian Dahlheim, head of sales at Volkswagen Group. “The doubling of our battery production and the high demand for all our vehicles clearly show that we are on the right track. This is the basis on which we will build on our efforts this year and continue to drive our transformation forward.”

In China, Volkswagen's performance was mediocre, partly due to a shortage of semiconductor chips. As the data declined, Volkswagen pledged to double its electric vehicle sales in China. However, Volkswagen's important competitor Tesla is very focused on the Chinese market, and more than 50% of the company's sales in 2021 came from cars made in China. In addition, Tesla exports cars from China to Europe, and the Berlin Super Factory continues to near completion.

In 2021, Volkswagen delivered a total of 8.882 million vehicles worldwide. In North America, Volkswagen performed well, with American customers making a huge contribution. Volkswagen said, "In North America, 908,400 customers received Volkswagen vehicles, a significant increase of 15.6%. Volkswagen Group's electric vehicle deliveries in the largest North American market tripled year-on-year to 37,200 vehicles, making it the second largest market for electric vehicles."
