Mobile industry is critical to post-pandemic economic growth

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the mobile industry has played an important role in keeping society and the economy running by providing critical network stability. Across China, operators have used their networks to support frontline medical treatment efforts to curb the spread of the virus, including remote patient diagnosis using 5G. In this sense, the pandemic has served as a litmus test for a range of 5G solutions, further demonstrating the value of this technology to society.

The mobile industry will continue to make a significant contribution to China's economy. In 2021, mobile technology and services contributed 5.6% of China's GDP, equivalent to $900 billion in economic value added. The mobile ecosystem also created about 6 million jobs (directly and indirectly) and contributed nearly $100 billion through taxes, making a significant contribution to government finances.

While controlling the pandemic, the priority for governments is to drive economic recovery, promote sustainable growth, and increase resilience to future shocks. Advanced connectivity technologies are essential to achieving this goal, such as improving productivity and efficiency through digital transformation of industries supported by 5G and the Internet of Things. In mainland China, the State Council of China has released a blueprint for developing a digital economy, with the goals of digitalization of public services and governance systems, innovation of strategic technologies, and self-sufficiency in areas such as semiconductors.
