Oculus founder: Virtual reality is still 10 years away from you

In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey said it would take another 10 years for virtual reality devices to replace your smartphone as a mainstream computing platform.

As for why it takes so long, Palmer Luckey explained that only when the performance of virtual reality devices becomes better and smaller, users will consider using it every day and it will become a part of your life. This may take 5 years or even longer 10 years.

Oculus itself is a big procrastinator. They released the first prototype of the Oculus Rift back in 2012, but didn't release the consumer Rift headset until June of last year, and the headset is only now ready to ship. That's three years in the making.

He also admitted that the current bulky "helmet" design is not the most ideal for virtual reality devices. If it can eventually become a thin and portable design like Google Glass, it may be more popular with consumers. One of the reasons for the failure of Google Glass is that it is considered not fashionable enough, for example: there is no choice of multiple frames, no myopia lenses...

If Oculus wants to avoid the failure of Google Glass, it has to find a solution to another problem - price.

This question is still unknown. Palmer Luckey said on Twitter that the price of Oculus Rift will not be too cheap because the first generation of hardware is for people who try new things. In addition, its CEO Brendan Iribe once revealed at a conference that the cost of Oculus Rift is about $1,500 (about 9,700 yuan).

This price includes an Oculus Rift helmet and a PC host. According to the hardware standards of the "certified host" previously announced by Oculus, these PCs are equipped with at least an Intel i5 processor, 8G memory, Nvidia's GTX 970 or AMD 290 graphics card.

All of these parts will cost at least $900, which means that even if the Oculus Rift is released on time in the first quarter of 2016, it will be very expensive.
