Japan conducts 5G network-connected self-driving car trials

NTT DoCoMo and DeNA announced on November 11, 2016 that they will jointly conduct a demonstration test using the fifth generation mobile communication system (5G) for remote control of autonomous vehicles. As a first step, the test will use the camera installed on the autonomous vehicle to capture high-definition images of the surrounding area of ​​the autonomous vehicle while it is driving, and transmit them using 5G wireless technology.

The purpose of this demonstration test is to remotely control an autonomous vehicle without a driver, and 5G wireless technology will be used to connect an operator and an autonomous vehicle in remote locations. DoCoMo's experience in 5G wireless technology and DeNA's experience in designing mobile services using autonomous driving technology will be combined to remotely monitor autonomous vehicles and provide support services to passengers, with the goal of realizing services that can make autonomous driving more secure and safer.

At the "DOCOMO R&D Open House 2016" held at the "DoCoMo R&D Center" in Yokosuka Science Park (Hikaru no Oka, Yokosuka City) from November 17 to 18, the two companies will demonstrate the project's first experiment, using 5G networks to transmit images captured by cameras equipped with DeNA's driverless bus "Robot Shuttle."
