Pure electric vehicles are more environmentally friendly than hydrogen fuel cell vehicles

In a recent study, researchers from the United States and Germany compared pure electric vehicles and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles and found that pure electric vehicles have more advantages than hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in terms of reducing emissions and are a more environmentally friendly and economical choice.

Stanford University in the United States issued a press release on the 14th saying that in order to study which type of electric vehicles has more environmental and economic advantages, the school cooperated with researchers from the Technical University of Munich in Germany, and selected the town of Los Altos Hills in Santa Clara County in northern California as the research object. It speculated on the popularization of new energy vehicles , related infrastructure construction and use of solar energy in the town in the next 10 to 20 years, and used a computer model specially developed by Thomas Hamacher, a professor at the Technical University of Munich, for simulation.

This sunny town currently has about 8,000 residents, with outstanding solar power generation in Santa Clara County and the highest car ownership in California. Researchers speculate that pure electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will be more widely used in the local area in the next 10 to 20 years, and electric vehicles will account for about 38% of the total local transportation by 2035. The researchers input the above speculation into the computer model along with data such as the total amount of energy required in Los Altos Hills in a day and the cost of building electric vehicle-related infrastructure. The simulation analysis found that pure electric vehicles performed better than hydrogen fuel cell vehicles in reducing carbon emissions. In order for hydrogen fuel cell vehicles to be competitive in terms of overall cost, the vehicle pricing must be much lower than that of pure electric vehicles. However, the reality is that in the foreseeable future, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will be much more expensive than pure electric vehicles.

Matthew Perrow, who worked on the study, said the research provides objective, data-backed analysis to help decision makers in California and elsewhere understand which technology paths have more advantages in addressing climate change.
