Consumer Reports compares the fuel efficiency of nearly 50 SUVs

SUVs are widely considered to be versatile vehicles that can carry both passengers and cargo, but now you don't have to sacrifice fuel efficiency for more space. The fuel efficiency of many SUV series is almost on par with that of large sedans. There are many hybrid and diesel-powered SUV series on the market, but gasoline engine SUVs are generally more fuel-efficient.

Consumer Reports measures nearly 50 SUVs in its lineup using precision meters to get the closest miles per gallon possible. Our overall mpg is split equally between city and highway.
