Audi employees are afraid of layoffs

Recently, according to foreign media reports, Audi has guaranteed that there will be no compulsory layoffs in Germany before 2020 and extended the job guarantee period by two years.


In October, Audi lowered its sales and profit forecasts due to further rising costs for compensation for the emissions scandal. However, on December 5, German time, Audi said that senior executives will work hard to negotiate a "comprehensive plan" with the union, which may extend the job security of more than 61,000 employees in Germany to the next decade.
"The extension of the employment guarantee is a major success," union leader Peter Mosch told tens of thousands of employees gathered at Audi's Ingolstadt factory in Germany. Audi executives and the union are expected to reach an agreement next year.
Volkswagen Group's Volkswagen brand and German labor unions have ensured that there will be no compulsory layoffs in Germany by 2025. This agreement clears the way for Volkswagen Germany to lay off 23,000 employees through mergers and acquisitions, early retirement, and reduction of temporary workers. Starting in January this year, Audi decided to use the Brussels plant to build its first mass-produced electric vehicle and chose the plant as an important factory for Volkswagen Group's electric vehicles. This incident caused panic among Audi German employees.
Audi has also said it may consider laying off 1,500 temporary workers at its Ingolstadt plant, which has a total of 44,000 employees. The union reached a consensus with the company's management last month to retain the high-priced night shift, but the agreement included some other changes in production.
In fact, when it comes to layoffs, it all comes down to the tailpipe scandal. Under the background of the tailpipe scandal, it is difficult for internal promotion to avoid repeating the mistakes of continuous replacement and layoffs. Audi, in a dilemma, has to look to the outside world - looking for someone who is not related to the tailpipe scandal and is capable of doing the job.
In addition, the search for foreign aid is also related to Audi's own weak performance. Although Audi is among the three luxury brands BBA, many reports point out that there are certain differences between Audi and Mercedes-Benz and BMW, and Audi's recognition and acceptance in many regions are not as high as those of the other two brands. In the early stage of its development in the Chinese market, Audi took advantage of the wild growth of the Chinese auto market and its image as an "official car" and was quite prosperous. Even so, Audi has not been able to get rid of public doubts such as "Only Chinese people regard Audi as a luxury brand, and it has no status in the global market."
In the past two years, the ranking of China's luxury car market has been quietly changing. After Mercedes-Benz got rid of the channel dilemma, its development momentum in China has been rapid, and it is overtaking Audi in the Chinese market and rewriting the ranking. In addition to the three BBA brands, Volvo, Jaguar Land Rover and other once niche luxury brands are rising up and have always had the ambition and momentum to conquer the city.
In such a fierce competition, Audi is facing a sales slump, and it is being forced out by dealers because of "one woman marrying two men" and meager profits, which is worse than the previous one. For a large business entity, although a single incident will not lead to a sharp decline, the decline has already appeared. The root cause, whether it is the "exhaust gate" or the dispute with Chinese dealers, reflects that a company has abandoned its corporate social responsibility and the spirit of win-win with partners in the face of commercial interests, and its core values ​​have deviated.
This explains why Audi employees are so worried about layoffs.
