Another giant joins the BMW-Intel autonomous driving research and development alliance

On June 20th local time, Germany's Continental AG announced that it had joined BMW, Intel and Mobileye in the development of an autonomous driving platform. Continental will be responsible for the integration of components and software.

Continental said in a statement that it will play an important role in the marketization of the jointly developed autonomous driving platform. Once successfully developed, the autonomous driving platform can be sold to other car companies. Continental said that it will provide extensive product knowledge and skills throughout the development of assisted driving and autonomous driving.

Continental CEO Elmar Degenhart said in an email, "Through comprehensive and rapid cooperation across the industry, we can meet the huge demand for autonomous driving technology research and development, and the production cost is lower than the cost of independent research and development.

In July 2016, BMW, Intel and Mobileye announced that they would jointly develop self-driving cars and plan to achieve mass production in 2021. Just a month ago, Delphi also joined the alliance.

Due to the high integration costs of software, hardware and data, as well as the accelerated development of autonomous vehicles, major automakers and parts suppliers have formed several alliances to jointly promote the development of autonomous driving technology. In April this year, Daimler also formed a similar alliance with Bosch to accelerate the development of autonomous vehicles.
