FCA's smallest North American assembly plant will close next month, and Dodge Viper production will cease

According to foreign media reports, FCA said it will temporarily close the Conner assembly plant from August 31, and the Dodge Viper will also be discontinued.

In a 2015 agreement with the United Auto Workers (UAW), FCA said it would stop producing the slow-selling Dodge Viper, a powerful car that costs about $90,000. It is not yet known which model the plant will be responsible for producing next after the suspension of production.

The factory currently still has more than 80 workers manually producing the Viper series. In a document submitted to the Michigan government on June 30, FCA mentioned that it will provide jobs for these 80 workers in other factories in the future.

Conner is FCA's smallest assembly plant in North America and has been producing cars for more than 25 years. Last year, FCA sold 630 Vipers, down 8.7% from 2015.

The new U.S. auto safety regulations will be officially implemented on September 1, and the Dodge Viper had to stop production at the end of August because it could not meet the regulations. However, FCA has celebrated the end of Viper production many times in more than a year.

In the past few years, many workers at the Conner plant have moved from other FCA plants, but as Viper sales have declined, Conner workers have had to face the threat of unemployment. At first, out of affection for Chrysler, and then out of affection for FCA, some workers chose to stay. The plant is hand-assembled and painted, so it produces more customized vehicles.
