On August 8, a Chinese supplier of Tesla revealed, "Apple may soon launch a new energy vehicle. The prototype should have come out now, and small batches of samples will be delivered at the end of this month. But it is confidential and even internal directors can't see it." Apple has been keeping quiet about its new energy vehicle project, and Tim Cook has remained noncommittal. But it has long been an open secret that Apple is actually making cars. However, the speed at which the project is progressing is unexpected. The above-mentioned person familiar with the matter revealed that the reason why Apple Car’s confidentiality work is so well done is that Apple has sufficient capital guarantees and does not need to keep shouting for financing like Tesla and FF. As early as 2005, an unnamed Apple employee revealed that "Apple is developing a product that can compete with Tesla." Recently, the case in which former Apple engineer Zhang Xiaolang was sued for allegedly stealing Apple’s autonomous driving-related trade secrets has revealed more inside information. Zhang Xiaolang was recruited by Apple to develop the "Titan" autonomous driving project in December 2015. He was responsible for designing and testing circuit boards used to analyze sensor data in the team. He left on April 30 this year. The confidential information he downloaded involved Apple's self-driving car prototype and prototype requirements (power requirements, low voltage requirements, battery system, powertrain, etc.). According to information revealed in relevant legal documents, at least 5,000 Apple employees had access to data related to its autonomous driving work. According to multiple sources, a team of Apple employees is working on automotive products in a new research lab at a top-secret location near Apple headquarters in Cupertino. The team is led by an experienced manager from Apple's iPhone division. This lab also emerged after the release of the new iPhone 6 and Apple Watch. Apple's "Titan Project" was originally thought to produce a whole car, but it was later reported that at the end of 2016, the focus turned to self-driving car technology. Apple does test its self-driving system — just recently, it increased the number of its test vehicles in California to 66. Apple not only sent senior executives to manage the car manufacturing project, but also continued to poach people from Tesla.
