On September 26, autonomous driving startup JingChi Technology announced a 5G strategic partnership with Guangdong Unicom to jointly establish a "5G Joint Innovation Laboratory" based on L4 autonomous driving. This is also the country's first 5G application innovation joint laboratory based on end-to-end application testing. The strategic cooperation between Jingchi and China Unicom will be implemented in multiple fields, including the experimentation and development of 5G application scenarios, research and development of data center services and edge computing applications, exploration of the commercialization of 5G scenario applications, and construction of V2V and V2X intelligent transportation and smart city systems. Guangdong Unicom has deployed a 5G network covering the entire island for Jingchi’s headquarters on Guangzhou Bio Island, helping Jingchi to develop and test driverless applications under the 5G network. During the application scenario demonstration session at the press conference, the Jingchi driverless car drove into the scene. There was no driver or safety officer in the front seat of the car. Only the steering wheel was turning to complete driving actions such as straight driving, turning, and reversing. This process was completely controlled by the Jingchi remote control center through the 5G network. Jingchi said that the original intention of developing the Jingchi remote control system was to help unmanned driving out of difficulties. When the vehicle encounters "extreme situations", appropriate manual intervention is carried out, and remote control of the vehicle is the safest and most effective means. Under the 5G network, the speed of remote control driving in the background will be greatly improved, 4-8 times higher than that of the 4G network under the same environment, and the delay will be shortened to less than 10 milliseconds, which is safer and more immediate. At the press conference, Jingchi Technology CEO Han Xu and Guangdong Unicom Party Committee Deputy Secretary and Deputy General Manager Feng Huajun jointly signed a strategic cooperation agreement. The strategic cooperation between the two parties will be implemented in the fields of experimentation and development of 5G application scenarios, data center services and edge computing application research and development, commercialization exploration of 5G scenario applications, V2V and V2X intelligent transportation and smart city system construction. Guangzhou is one of the 5G pilot cities of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. Guangdong Unicom has now taken the lead in deploying a 5G network covering the entire island for Jingchi’s headquarters in Guangzhou Bio Island. Jingchi has thus become the first unmanned driving company in the country to use 5G network.
