Under the new subsidy policy, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has issued five batches of recommended catalogues, highlighting four major trends in new energy vehicles

So far, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has released nine batches of recommended catalogues in 2018. Among them, there are five batches of recommended catalogues that meet the requirements of the 2018 new subsidy policy, namely the 5th to 9th batches of recommended catalogues, which contain a total of 203 new energy passenger vehicles.

Overall, according to statistics from Gaogong Electric Vehicle Network, the new energy passenger vehicles on the recommended list this year showed the following trends: First, the models are getting larger. Unlike 2017, when small and micro electric vehicles accounted for a large share, SUV models accounted for the largest proportion in each batch of recommended catalogs in 2018, followed by sedans and MPV models. At the same time, there were few medium and large electric vehicles in 2017, but this year, more than a dozen automakers including BYD, SAIC Roewe, Great Wall, Qiantu, and Weilai have launched medium and large electric vehicles to tap into the mid-to-high-end new energy vehicle market.

Second, the cruising range has increased by nearly 40%. Affected by the adjustment of the new subsidy policy in 2018, the average operating range of pure electric passenger cars included in the recommended catalog this year has increased from about 250km in 2017 to more than 300km, and the highest has increased to 344km, an increase of about 40%.

Third, more foreign battery and motor brands have entered the recommended catalog. Compared with 2017, this year more new car manufacturers have entered the recommended catalog, and more joint venture brands have launched new energy vehicles.

Compared with domestic brands, these two types of companies prefer to use foreign batteries or foreign motor brands, resulting in more and more foreign battery brands including FMC and LG Chem, and more and more foreign motor brands such as BorgWarner entering the recommended catalog.

Fourth, energy density has increased significantly, and more and more car companies are working hard to get 1.2 times the subsidy. According to statistics from Gaogong Electric Vehicle Network, the average energy density of pure electric passenger cars in the 2017 catalog was about 110Wh/kg, but this year it is above 140Wh/kg. At the same time, there are more and more models with an energy density of more than 160Wh/kg, and the proportion in recent batches of catalogs has remained above 10%, which can get 1.2 times the subsidy.

Range Analysis

In general, in the 2017 recommended catalog, since small and micro electric vehicles accounted for the majority, and most of them had a range of 150-250km, and due to the 2018 subsidy policy favoring long-range models, this year's models with a range of less than 300 kilometers, especially less than 200 kilometers, are decreasing, while models with a range of more than 400 kilometers are showing a rapid growth trend.

Among them, the models with a range of 300-400km accounted for the largest proportion in each batch of recommended catalogs, and their proportion increased from 35.03% in the 5th batch to 68.18% in the 9th batch, followed by models with a range of more than 400 kilometers; while models with a range of less than 200 kilometers dropped from 13.27% to 0.

It is worth mentioning that among the new energy passenger cars launched this year, there are 10 models with an operating range of more than 450km, from four automakers: BAIC, BYD, WM Motor, and Yema; and the model with the highest operating range reaches 476km, from the EX3 model under BAIC, equipped with a power battery with an energy density of 151.37Wh/kg provided by CATL.

Models with a range of more than 450km

In addition, although the number of micro electric vehicles in each batch of catalogs has decreased this year, most of the hot-selling A00-level micro electric vehicles, represented by Zhidou D3, Chery eQ1, Zotye E200, etc., have increased their operating range to more than 250 kilometers. Among them, a large part of micro electric vehicles have an operating range of more than 300 kilometers, and the highest one, the Ora R1 under Great Wall Motors, has reached 351km.

Supporting battery analysis

Gaogong Electric Vehicle Network has counted the 5th to 9th batches of catalogs and learned that battery companies such as CATL and Lishen are at the forefront of the number of supporting models in each batch of catalogs, and the supporting car companies cover a wide range. For example, CATL not only provides supporting services for independent brands such as BAIC and new car companies such as WM Motor, but also for many joint venture brands such as BMW Brilliance, Beijing Hyundai, and Dongfeng Nissan.

Battery companies with a large number of supporting models in each batch of catalogs

In addition, other battery companies that provide a large number of new energy passenger vehicles include Guoxuan High-tech, Farasis Energy, Sunton New Energy, BYD, and CATL.

As more and more new joint venture brands are launched, more and more foreign battery companies appear in each batch of catalogs, including FMC, LG Chem, SAIC Volkswagen and many other foreign battery brands. For example, Changan Ford uses FMC's power battery, while SAIC Volkswagen is equipped with SAIC Volkswagen's power battery pack.

Matching motor analysis

Judging from the recommended catalogs of the 5th to 9th batches, there are many motor companies supporting new energy passenger vehicles in each batch of catalogs, and the proportion of motors provided by car companies themselves is increasing. In addition to the self-supplied motors of car companies, companies such as Jingjin Electric, Shanghai Electric Drive, and Shenzhen Dadihe have advantages in the field of new energy passenger vehicles.

At the same time, foreign brands such as BorgWarner, HYUNDAI MOBIS, and Denso are increasingly appearing in the recommended catalog. Among them, WM Motor and Great Wall Motor have both selected BorgWarner's drive motors.

In addition, in addition to the increasing number of domestic brands that have their own motor products, many joint venture brand models such as FAW Toyota and SAIC Volkswagen are equipped with their own motor products.

The motor companies with the largest number of matching models in each batch of catalogs

In general, there are a large number of battery and motor companies involved in the supply of new energy passenger vehicles. Each batch of recommended catalogs has more than 20 companies participating in the supply, and most companies have supplied 1-2 models. At the same time, judging from the supply situation in the catalog, it has become an important trend for new energy passenger vehicle companies to independently master battery PACK technology and motor technology.

Energy density analysis

As the 2018 subsidy policy further increases the requirements for energy density, models with energy density between 140 (inclusive) and 160Wh/kg will be subsidized at 1.1 times, and models with energy density above 160Wh/kg will be subsidized at 1.2 times. For this reason, the proportion of models with energy density above 140wh/kg in the 2018 recommended catalogue has risen sharply, from less than 5% in 2017 to a maximum of 86.37%.

In the recent batches of recommended catalogs, many automakers continue to offer high subsidies, and the number of models with energy density above 160Wh/kg has gradually increased, from 0.68% in the fifth batch of recommended catalogs to 15.56%. In the seventh to ninth batches of catalogs, the proportion of models with energy density above 160Wh/kg has remained above 10%, and these models can get 1.2 times the subsidy.
