The media reported that India's unemployment rate is high and young people are keen on starting their own businesses. Netizens complained that this is following China's footsteps.

In January 2017, the number of employed people in India was 408.4 million, while the number of unemployed people seeking jobs was 25.9 million.

However, by the end of July, the number of employed people in India had fallen to 405.4 million, while the number of job seekers had dropped to 13.7 million, according to data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), an Indian think tank.

CMIE also pointed out that India's young people are moving away from the labor force. Mahesh Vyas, director of the think tank, said: "India's youth are losing jobs in large numbers, but at the same time they are reluctant to look for jobs."

Mahesh said that India has the largest young population in the world (according to the Internet Queen Report, the number of young people in India aged between 15 and 34 years old has reached 460 million, accounting for 64%). It is very dangerous for the country's economy and society if such a large group does not look for jobs.

Mahesh believes that the reasons behind this phenomenon need to be rigorously studied and taken seriously. At present, he can only give some personal speculations, such as: "Young people are facing an employment environment where there are fewer and fewer jobs and lower wages. Faced with such an environment, young people may decide to obtain a higher level of education instead of continuing to look for jobs that don't even exist."

He believes that young people may be participating in government-led skills training programs. This phenomenon is common in developed countries. When job opportunities decrease, people tend to retrain to change their employment conditions.

Another reason why young people are reluctant to find jobs may be that India is currently experiencing a nationwide entrepreneurial boom. On August 9, Randstad, a world-renowned recruitment agency, released a survey on employment conditions in 33 countries around the world.

In one survey of 400 corporate employees in India, more than 56% of the respondents were considering quitting their jobs to start their own business, a proportion that exceeds the global average.

The survey results show that Indian employees have the highest entrepreneurial enthusiasm in the world. 83% of Indian employees expressed their willingness to become entrepreneurs, which is far higher than the global average of 53%.

The survey also found that young Indians have the highest enthusiasm for entrepreneurship. Among respondents aged 25-34, 72% are willing to start a business, while employees aged 45-54 are not very interested in the idea of starting a business.

This may be because young Indian employees feel the entrepreneurial atmosphere. Indian Prime Minister Modi established a startup fund with a total amount of 100 billion rupees in 2016. Not only the government supports it, but India's fastest economic development speed, market potential of more than one billion people, and rapid popularization of the Internet have attracted global top capital such as Tiger Capital, Temasek, and Alibaba to invest in India.

In addition, with the support of multiple capitals, India has indeed seen the emergence of local unicorn companies such as Flipkart, Ola, and Paytm, which were still unknown small companies just a few years ago. The emergence of these unicorn companies has given young people in India hope for entrepreneurship.

Of course, starting a business is risky, and Indians need to be cautious. Randstad's survey shows some dangerous signs. In India, the mortality rate of start-ups is very high. According to IBM data, 90% of Indian start-ups fail within less than five years after their establishment. Lack of innovation and insufficient funds are the most important factors for the closure of these companies.

It is true that only a few people can succeed in starting a business, and only a few can solve the employment problem through starting a business. A large number of young people are unemployed and unwilling to find a job, so they can easily turn to crime. Then the huge demographic dividend will become a huge demographic burden, which is not good for the Indian economy and Indian society.
