Independent auto brands are gradually rising, but parts are still the fatal weakness of China's auto industry

At present, the market share of domestic automobile brands has approached half of the domestic automobile market. Domestic brands have made great progress in both product and market share. However, China's automobile industry is still weak and still lacks the ability to develop independently and healthily.

The biggest shortcoming of China's auto industry is the backwardness of its auto parts industry. At present, China does not have a strong enough auto parts production system to support the development of China's auto industry.

In the 2017 Global Top 100 Auto Parts Companies list, the top ten are occupied by companies from Germany, the United States, Japan, South Korea and Canada. In this list, the highest-ranked Chinese company is Yanfeng Automotive Interior Systems, followed by CITIC Dicastal, which ranks 71st.

The number of Chinese auto parts companies that made the list is small and they rank low, and most of them produce single parts. Bosch, Magna, and Denso, which rank high, are all comprehensive auto parts companies. China's auto industry has not yet cultivated a comprehensive auto parts supplier.

Without an independent parts system as support, no matter how good the performance of domestic brands is, they can only be like assembled computers and cannot occupy an advantageous position.

The heavy reliance on foreign parts has severely restricted the improvement of the profit margins of local brands. For the same part, the price of a local brand may be twice as high as that of a joint venture.

Without an independent parts supply system, domestic brands can only piece together parts from different countries. Different countries have their own auto industry systems, and parts under the same system are easier to coordinate and cooperate. On the contrary, domestic brands that "learn from the strengths of many" are more likely to encounter matching problems caused by conflicts between parts under different systems.
